A summary of "Cassandra’s Mirror" by Bernard Werber
The story of a seventeen-year-old girl with the gift of foreseeing catastrophes and an erased memory of her own childhood reveals the mechanisms of society’s voluntary blindness in the face of impending threats. The novel’s heroine exists at the intersection of absolute vulnerability and powerful psychic strength, trying to avert inevitable tragedies in a world that rejects any alarming predictions. Werber wrote this fantasy novel in 2009, basing the plot on his personal experience of wandering across America, conversations with the homeless in Paris, a descent into the city’s catacombs, and the concept of the network research project "Tree of Possibilities," which he founded in 2001.
Escape from school and the fence line
In the office of the principal of the "Swallows" boarding school, Philippe Papadakis scolds seventeen-year-old Cassandra Katzenberg for her nighttime hysteria about an impending explosion and a fight with fellow student Violaine Duparc. The principal takes the girl to the staff quarters, reads the myth of the Trojan prophetess, and hands her a package from an unknown sender with the letter "b." The conversation escalates into violence: Papadakis closes the distance, causing the orphan to bite off the principal’s earlobe and run out into the darkness of the March suburb.
The package conceals a strange device. A gold wristwatch with a dial displays a 5-second probability of death and the number 88%. Fleeing a police patrol car through courtyards in a pouring rain, the fugitive finds a gap in a rusty chain-link fence topped with barbed wire. Beyond the wall of trees and bushes, the wilderness of the northern municipal waste dump (MWL) opens up.
Settlement of Outcasts
In the fog, a girl is surrounded by a pack of feral dogs. An arrow from a bow fells the leader, and her savior turns out to be a bearded strongman named Orlando, nicknamed the Baron, a former soldier in the Foreign Legion. The bearded man leads the rescued girl to the bonfire of the "Redemption" commune. Three more people live among the piles of junk: the vulgar, red-haired ex-actress Esmeralda (the Duchess), a young Korean hacker named Kim Vien (the Marquis), and an elderly Senegalese healer named Napraz Wade (the Viscount).
The wasteland’s inhabitants greet the stranger with hostility, accusing her of being bourgeois and untidy. The fugitive is allowed to spend the night in a canned food warehouse. That night, she dreams of an ancient priestess, followed by a detailed image of a man in white blowing up the EFAP chemical plant at 9:30 AM. Waking up, the visitor begs the beggars to go rescue the workers. The beggars wave her off: the morning news confirms an explosion at a petrochemical facility. Amazed by the coincidence, the beggars give the stranger clothes and chips and demand she leave.
Wandering the streets
Loneliness in the big city greets Cassandra with the smell of bleach in the back alleys of supermarkets and the hostility of beggars at the train station. At the bakery, the saleswoman, Charlotte, gives the hungry girl a lemon pie and tells her about her alcoholic father, who has a tattoo of an eagle with a snake on his belly. Satiety frightens the fugitive: she can’t let up. She disguises herself as a Goth, builds a stash in a brick wall, and reads historical accounts of the siege of Troy in a bookstore, escaping from her guards.
The inscription on the watch leads the fugitive to the Montparnasse skyscraper, to the office of the company "Future Insurance." Slipping into an office marked "D. Katzenberg," the girl logs in to the computer with the password "Cassandra." A file containing an email from Daniel’s brother appears on the monitor. The program "Probabilis" combines data from the GPS, the heart rate monitor on the bracelet, and city video cameras, calculating the risk of death in real time.
A security guard scares off the intruder. At an intersection, Cassandra loses consciousness under the wheels of a car. In the hospital room, Inspector Pierre-Marie Pélissier reports that her brother, Daniel, recently jumped from the roof of the high-rise onto a truck loaded with foam, survived the explosion of a fuel tanker, and escaped. The appearance of a bandaged Papadakis forces the patient to flee. The orderlies incapacitate the fugitive with a sedative.
Back to the roots
Waking up tied to a bed in the boarding school’s infirmary, the girl listens to Papadakis’s discourse on ingratitude. That night, a disfigured Violaine stalks her with a scalpel, thirsting for revenge. The patient ties up her attacker with the cords of the blinds, finds the "Experiment 24" folder with her childhood address in the director’s safe, and takes a taxi to her parents’ abandoned house in Courbevoie.
Dusty rooms hold monographs by her mother, child psychiatrist Sofia Katzenberg, on autism and the connections between the hemispheres of the brain, as well as books by her father, the future minister Jacques Katzenberg. Verdi’s opera "Nabucco" plays in the nursery. It was to the sounds of this opera four years ago, at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Giza, that a bomb tore her parents to pieces, after which the thirteen-year-old orphan completely forgot the past. Hearing Papadakis’s footsteps searching for her, the woman of the house hides in an alcove, and the next morning heads back to the dump.
Dedication by trash
Feral dogs chase a runaway into a snare, where Kim tries to strangle her with nunchucks, testing her resilience. The Redemption residents agree to take the runaway in if she survives a night in a container filled with slaughterhouse waste. Cassandra throws a ladder outside to cut off her escape. In the darkness, hordes of rats are drawn by the smell of carrion. Kim, arriving just in time with a torch, saves the girl from being bitten.
The boy brings the bitten guest to his hut with monitors and batteries. Kim treats the wounds with whiskey, displays anarchist slogans on homemade T-shirts, and confesses to having fled North Korea after the death of his family at the hands of pirates. The next morning, the commune declares the newcomer a full member with the title of Princess. Everyone recounts their crimes: Baron killed a Legion commander in a duel, Esmeralda mauled a producer with a fork, Napraz fled after a client died from an uncertified potion.
The friends build the Princess a house from the carcasses of four cars, old washing machines, and dolls. That evening, the initiation rite culminates with the consumption of a mixture of vodka, beer, tequila, and liqueur, which sends the newcomer into an alcoholic coma. Believing the newcomer to be dead, the beggars wrap her in a thick construction bag and cover her with plastic dolls. A fox cub, Yin-Yang, who had been fed and chewed through the plastic, helps her escape from this suffocating confinement.
Deadly cargo in the subway
Barely emerging from her grave, Cassandra announces a new nightmare: an explosion will rock the Champs-Élysées metro station at 8:19 a.m., the bomb hidden in a white bag containing tennis rackets. With beatings and screams, the Princess forces the tramps to set off.
After jumping the turnstiles at Clignancourt station, the beggars fall under the control of the patrol. To escape, the Duchess gives up all their savings, 385 euros, to pay the fine for riding without a ticket. On the next train, the Marquis spots a white bag and pulls the emergency brake in the tunnel before the Champs-Élysées.
Passengers flee along the tracks in panic. Orlando is left alone on the platform with the ticking fuse. While the terrified Duchess is beating the prophetess for the Baron’s death, the veteran emerges from the underpass. It turns out he simply pulled the AA batteries from the timer.
The road to the ministry
After a fight at a gypsy wedding, where Cassandra knocks out Kim’s armed opponent with a brick, and the death of a Yorkshire terrier in an Albanian dog fight, the commune is in tatters. Esmeralda chops off the mutilated dog’s head with a cleaver and throws out the Princess, who attacked her. Kim leaves with the exile.
The hacker and the prophetess visit Papadakis, forcing him to confess: his parents deliberately developed the right hemisphere of his children’s brains, suppressing logic and forbidding speech until the age of nine. The goal was to create pure clairvoyants. The trail then leads the fugitives to the abandoned Ministry of the Future on Rue Saint-Dominique. The only remaining employee, Charles de Vézelay, delivers Daniel’s note and explains: the prophecies of the ancient Mayans programmed history, as the people fervently believed in the calendar.
The Death of Daniel and the Catacombs
A chase after his brother’s electric car on a stolen scooter culminates on the roof of the Montparnasse Tower. Daniel stands at the very parapet. He declares to his sister that civilization is hopeless, that humanity is bent on self-destruction and will perish in 2012. Before his stunned sister’s eyes, Daniel plunges 210 meters. The device shows a 99% chance of death: after crashing onto the pavement, the mathematician leaves a note declaring the inevitability of what happened.
Fleeing police raids, Kim leads his companion through a gap in the track of the ring railway into the tunnels of abandoned quarries. The vagabonds descend into the flooded galleries. The water reaches their chins, the candles go out, the map becomes soaked and torn. Guided only by the fading signals of the clock’s sensor, the fugitives break through a wall of loose earth and fall right into the Denfert-Rochereau Ossuary, before the eyes of shocked Japanese tourists. The metro ticket inspectors, seeing the fugitives’ ragged appearance, unexpectedly show mercy and give free tickets to the outskirts.
Plague threat
In the ashes of the camp, the beggars gather again. Cassandra has a vision of bacteriological sabotage: a container containing the plague is to be dropped into Montsouris’s drinking water reservoirs at 11:00 PM on March 31st. Having secured an old Citroën van, the commune races to its destination.
Having cleared the fence, the rescuers tie the guard with his belt and jump into the cold water of the central reservoir. The timer on the floating flask counts down. Napra immediately plugs the outlet tube containing the green poison with his own little finger. The Baron drags the device into the park courtyard, where the Duchess douses everything with bottles of whiskey and Javel water, neutralizing the infection. They celebrate their victory with a drink on the grass, after which the unconscious prophetess is taken away by a sobering-up station patrol.
At the station, Inspector Pélissier prepares to send the woman detained for arson, which she burned down before Daniel’s escape, to a penal colony. On the way, the escort van is rammed by a car carrying the Redeemers. Freed from the rubble, Cassandra returns to the junkyard.
Truth and the Mirror
Orlando is wounded in the stomach by a stray bullet. Napraz, without anesthesia, removes the lead with tweezers, while Cassandra holds the veteran’s hand, transmitting life force. Examining the legionnaire’s naked body, she notices a tattoo of an eagle with a snake and realizes that the Baron is the fugitive father of the Parisian pastry chef Charlotte.
The terrorists overtake the commune. Covering her comrades’ retreat, Kassandra dispatches the enemies with arrows from her bow, and in hand-to-hand combat in the darkness of the waste incinerator, she severs the commando leader’s carotid artery. The survivors are tied up and pushed into a mine cart toward the Moloch plant’s press. Director Papadakis saves the friends from being crushed by the millstones: remorseful, he jams the wheels with a crowbar.
The "Redemption" settlement has been burned to the ground, but the beggars are determined to rebuild the camp. Papadakis reveals the truth about the tragedy in Egypt: a nine-year-old mute girl, having gained speech, tormented her parents with her tantrums and drove them to hunger strikes, forcing them to agree to a fateful trip to Cairo. The realization of her own guilt purifies the orphan’s conscience through forgiveness. The director gives the student an ordinary analog watch.
That night, Cassandra and Kim climb back to the roof of the Montparnasse Tower. Gazing into the abyss, Kim understands: the future cannot be seen as a ready-made thing; it must be imagined and created moment by moment. Standing frozen at the edge of the platform, swept by the wind, they embrace in a lingering kiss.
