New Year’s voyage of exhibits from GRIMMWELT to the Samara Literary Museum

SAMARA. An exhibition dedicated to the Grimm brothers has opened in the Gorky Literary Museum.

New Year’s Eve is a time of miracles and magical stories. The Brothers Grimm (Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm) are invariably among the five main storytellers of all time. Tomics with their works, smoothed and combed to a safe condition for the fragile children’s psyche, are in almost every family. For linguists, folklore collectors, founders of scientific Germanic studies, and creators of the etymological German Dictionary (Das Deutsche Wörterbuch), composing fairy tales was more of a hobby. But not their linguistic research, namely the Bremen Town Musicians (Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten), Madame Blizzard (Frau Holle), Sweet Porridge (Der süße Brei), Rapunzel and dozens of other amazing stories glorified them to the whole world.

The first volume of fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm left the printing house on December 20, 1812. The bicentennial anniversary of the collection, which was included in the UNESCO special register “Memory of the World”, was widely celebrated in Germany 4 years ago. It included the first 86 tales of the brothers. They tirelessly collected, processed heard or read stories, without making secrets from the fact that many stories were borrowed from different sources. Here you can mention Charles Perrault, and Gianbattista Basil, and Giovanni Francesco Straparola, as well as Saketti and Boccaccio. Having reached the original newcomers, “uncastrated” versions of fairy tales amaze with an abundance of bloody scenes, the presence of pathological characters who do not disdain cannibalism and other perversions. A great guide for fans of psychoanalysis, followers of Jung and Freud. Although some psychologists believe that for a child, such horror stories are a good vaccine against fears and aggression.

The exposition of the four-story Museum of the Brothers Grimm in Kassel (Die GRIMMWELT Kassel) has many items that belonged to writers, manuscripts, documents, drawings. A small part of this exhibition is presented in the halls of the Samara Literary Museum named after Gorky. Among them - a reprint of the first edition of 1812 - "Kinder und Hausmärchen" - with notes by brothers, illustrations of famous artists to the most famous works, board games, and other interesting exhibits. During the New Year holidays, the exhibition will become a venue for competitions and literary quizzes.
