This book is the fourth volume in the "Chronicles of Echo" series. The series also includes the novels "The Forelock of the Earth," "The Lord of Mormora," "The Elusive Habba Hen," "The Woe of Lord Gro," "The Gluttonous Laugher," "The Gift of Shavanakhola," and "The Tubur Game." Each installment in the series tells the story of one of the guests at an inn located on the mystical border of worlds. The stories reveal blank spots in the biographies of the main characters, complementing the overall picture of the magical world. The plots develop independently, but are connected by recurring characters.

A cozy start

The action begins in the Coffee Grounds. Frank, Trisha, Max, and Melamori are listening to a leisurely story by Sir Shurf Lonli-Lockli. The guest decides to recount his turbulent youth on the eve of the Time of Troubles in Uguland. The companions drink kamra and comment on the story. Shurf warns his listeners of the grim nature of the upcoming narrative, confident that he will ruin everyone’s evening with unpleasant details. Frank kindly encourages the storyteller and promises to bake a sumptuous cheesecake with rare moon raisins. Trisha brews a special tea from twenty-two medicinal herbs to appease the guest.

Isolated childhood

Shurf was born into a very wealthy family. His father, a junior master of the Order of the Leaky Chalice, raised his son in an atmosphere of permissiveness and complete isolation from his peers. The boy early demonstrated exceptional magical aptitude. He masterfully flew at a height of about half a meter above the floor and actively used the Silent Speech. The young man grew up an arrogant loner, absolutely confident in his own superiority over those around him. Tutors quickly replaced one another, unable to tolerate the gifted child’s antics. Upon reaching the required age, he entered his father’s order, where he immediately attracted the attention of his superiors with his astonishing erudition.

Horror before eternity

The unexpected death of his father in a simple tavern brawl robbed Shurf of his naive belief in the immortality of mages. Overwhelmed by a primal fear of his own demise, he began diligently searching for reliable ways to overcome death. His study of ancient necromancy led to a crushing failure. An attempt to resurrect a tame silver fox yielded only a frightening semblance of life. The beast turned into a mindless, cold corpse with empty eyes. Shurf destroyed the creature and realized the limitations of his knowledge. He then resolved to gain unlimited power to protect himself from any potential threats. This required acquiring the secrets of the Order elders.

The Birth of a Monster

The young man cunningly acquired a prestigious position as a caretaker at the Order’s leaky aquariums by erasing the memory of the previous worker. These tanks contained a miraculous water that greatly enhanced the abilities of mages. One day, Shurf drank the entire supply of the magical liquid. The incredible energy literally tore his personality apart. He became a natural disaster known to the townspeople as the Mad Fishmonger. For years, this all-powerful sorcerer terrorized the capital. He brutally murdered his opponents, terrified ordinary citizens, and destroyed buildings, genuinely reveling in his absolute invulnerability. The remnants of his sanity only occasionally returned, bringing with them a vague dissatisfaction with his position.

Trophies and Nightmares

Obsessed with creating the perfect weapon, the madman broke into the secure residence of the Order of the Ice Hand. He smashed a magical crystal and brutally tore off the arm of Senior Magister Kiba Azzah. Shurf then tore apart the guard Yuk Yuggari who had lunged at him, taking the limb as well. From these horrifying trophies, he planned to create the legendary Death Gloves. However, the slain Magisters began to mercilessly exact revenge on Rybnik through his dreams. Falling asleep, Shurf fell into an endless, agonizing nightmare. The dead subjected him to horrific tortures of ice and fire. The suffering lasted an eternity within the confines of a single dream.

Unexpected rescue

To avoid torture, the exhausted youth stopped sleeping. Prolonged, brutal insomnia gradually drained his resources and robbed him of the last vestiges of sanity. During this period, he was tracked down by a Kettarian Hunter named Chiffa. The mercenary magically immobilized the exhausted Shurf in the Green Pett Cemetery. He forced the captive to perform long, measured breathing exercises. The rhythmic inhalations and exhalations helped Shurf calm his raging rage and regain clarity of mind. Chiffa gave the youth his blood to drink. This temporarily reliably concealed the scent of Rybnik from the dead mages in the dream world, allowing him to finally sleep without devastating nightmares.

The Void Between Worlds

The mentor radically solved the problem of his progressive madness. He forcibly sent his protégé to Humgat — the infinite space between realities. Finding himself in a shining void, Shurf experienced the final disintegration of the Mad Fishmonger’s chaotic personality. Focusing on rhythmic breathing, he found true, unshakable calm. He returned from Humgat as a completely new man, tightly controlling his emotions through strict internal discipline. The Hunter invited the rescued mage to become his partner. Their shared goal was to end the Time of Troubles once and for all. Achieving this ambitious goal required the immediate neutralization of the Grand Master of the Order of the Water Crow, Loiso Pondohva.

The perfect weapon

Chiffa convinced his apprentice to complete the unfinished work on the Death Gauntlets. With the help of the powerful Lady Sotofa Hanemer, Shurf secretly infiltrated the library of the Order of the Seven Leaf. There, obedient books would find their own pages and fall at the reader’s feet. The mage carefully studied the complex protective runes necessary for the safe handling of the ancient weapon. He successfully crafted gauntlets from the carefully preserved hands of dead masters. The left gauntlet instantly killed its victim, while the right merely paralyzed any opponent. With this deadly artifact in his possession, Shurf was fully prepared to challenge the invincible Loiso Pondokhwa.

Bait for the Master

Shurf resumed his brazen attacks on the followers of the Order of the Water Crow. He engaged in long, tense dialogues with Loiso via the Silent Speech. The youth persistently challenged the Grand Master to combat, feigning madness and bloodthirst for maximalism. Loiso ignored the brazen threats for a long time, laughing them off and telling stories of his own surreal nightmares. He told a parable about a two-faced man and a wet crow on a bridge, personifying the futility of human existence. However, over time, the Grand Master became intrigued by the unusual and persistent youth. Finally, Loiso appeared in person. He decided to show magnanimous mercy and kill the insolent youth with his own hands.

Trapped in someone else’s dream

At the moment of cautious physical contact, Chiffa’s cunning trap was triggered. The Kettarian Hunter had previously used Shurf as a living, invisible doorway to another reality. He suddenly cast both mages into an alien, dense dream. It was a strange world with toxic air and an ashen sky, where green and white pillars of flame blazed. Loiso found himself firmly trapped in this scorching valley, unable to use his usual Manifest magic. Shurf instantly suffocated in the poisoned atmosphere. Chiffa managed to pull his apprentice’s lifeless body back and bring him back to life with a bitter Uanduk potion.

New life

With the disappearance of the invincible Loyso Pondohva, the sorcerers’ long, grueling war quickly ended. The rescued Shurf meekly accepted his new path, agreeing to a long and absolutely flawless life at the side of his wise mentor. The Kettarian explained to him the essence of True Magic and the need to protect this world from destruction. The story in the tavern ends abruptly. Frank remarks that the children’s rhyme about the wet crow, which once drove Loyso mad, is well known to many. The guests fall silent, pondering the bizarre intricacies of magical destinies. Trisha calmly sips tea, and Frank goes to brew fresh coffee for the guests.
