The new novel by Bernhard Schlink. 22 years after the triumphant success of "Reader"

BERLIN. A new novel by Bernhard Schlink, the author of the international bestseller Reader, has been released.

Bernhard Schlink (Bernhard Schlink) was a member of the group of authors of the draft constitution created before the unification of Germany. He defended the interests of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and the German government in the Constitutional Court at the trial in Karlsruhe in 2005 in connection with the early parliamentary elections. His "parallel" literary life began in 1987, when he was written (co-authored by colleague Walter Popp) and published a criminal novel with political motivation, “Selbs Justiz”. New stories about a private detective were created by Schlink in "solo swimming". The issues that concern the heroes of his works, as well as himself, are guilt, oblivion, a crime that has no statute of limitations.

In 1995, the “Reader” (Vorleser) struck, putting Schlink in line with such giants of modern German literature as Hesse, Remarque, Böll, Süskind. The story focuses on the relationship of a 15-year-old teenager and a former concentration camp overseer, who later appeared in the dock on charges of the massacre of Jewish women locked up in a burning church. Illiteracy carefully hidden by the heroine leads to fatal consequences and a tragic ending.

The Reader has been translated into dozens of languages and published in huge print runs in Germany, France, other European countries and in America. He was at the very top of the New York Times bestseller list. Just as successful was the film adaptation of the book with Kate Winslet (Kate Winslet) in the title role. The actress received an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her.

22 years later, a new long-awaited Schlinka novel “Olga” was released - a reconstruction of the life of an amazing woman. The main character’s parents died of typhus, and her grandmother, who took care of her upbringing, is harsh towards her. Severe trials do not harden Olga, they only temper her character and desire to come true at all costs and realize her dream.

The narrative covers the period from the end of the 19th century to the 1970s. The story of the life of the main character, the crucial moments in the history of Germany: world wars, the creation of the Weimar Republic, the Nazis came to power. Olga is a woman who does not give up after experiencing disappointment and losing her love.
