This 2007 detective novel opens a series about private investigators Makar Ilyushin and Sergei Babkin. The plot weaves together the investigation into the disappearance of a young woman who fell into a cult and the tense drama surrounding the wealthy St. Petersburg family, the Golts. It is the first book in the popular "Investigations of Makar Ilyushin and Sergei Babkin" series. This series also includes the novels "Island of a Dream Come True," "The Dark Side of the Soul," and others. In 2012, the novel was successfully adapted into a television film by director Vyacheslav Lavrov.

Natasha’s new life in the mansion

Natasha, a former schoolteacher from Ryazan, marries a quiet bank clerk, Eduard Golts. She moves with her young son, Timofey, into her mother-in-law’s luxurious St. Petersburg mansion. A powerful businesswoman, Evgenia Genrikhovna Golts runs a successful chain of beauty salons, "Elina." In all matters of life, she relies on "Signs of Fate" — random events, fragments of phrases, or objects. She interprets them in a unique way to make business decisions.

Evgenia’s half-brother, Igor Sergeyevich Bobrov, lives with them in the mansion. He spends his days in an armchair reading books. His haughty wife, Alla Dmitrievna, is nearby. The household is maintained by the cook, Olga Stepanovna, the landlady’s personal secretary, Zhora, and the young cleaning lady, Ilona Vetrova. The elderly Sergei Kirillovich, Igor Bobrov’s father, lives in a separate guest house. Evgenia Genrikhovna once took pity on him and took him in, despite her brother’s protests. Natasha feels uncomfortable in the wealthy but cold home. Each pursues their own interests, and Alla Dmitrievna constantly shows her disdain for Natasha.

The missing daughter and the dangerous sect

Four years ago, Elina disappeared without a trace in Moscow. She was the youngest and beloved daughter of Yevgenia Genrikhovna. Her mother refused to believe she was dead and hired Moscow detective Makar Ilyushin to conduct a new search. Makar conducted a field investigation, interviewing Elina’s former neighbor and uncovering the reasons for the strange changes in her behavior before her disappearance. It turned out that Elina had fallen under the influence of a charismatic religious fanatic, Danila Solontsev. He called himself the Teacher. Danila organized a totalitarian sect, the "Nameless Ones," and led a group of followers on a long walking pilgrimage.

Elina went with them, completely submitting to their will, and soon became pregnant by the Teacher. Along the way, the sectarians endured severe physical and psychological trials. A girl was nearly drowned in a spring during a ritual. During the trek, another pilgrim, a heavyset woman named Vera, began to suffer from a choking cough. The escorts didn’t call doctors, and Vera died. Her body was secretly buried right in the forest.

Stumbling upon a poorly hidden corpse, Elina began to comprehend the madness of what was happening. She couldn’t escape due to the constant surveillance of the "guards." Near the abandoned village of Shatonino, at the gravestone of the hermit Luka, Danila staged the final test. He announced that to receive their true names from God, the sectarians must make a human sacrifice — kill Elina. Realizing the fanatics’ intentions, the girl broke free. She hit Danila in the face with a heavy stone and ran into the forest.

The murder of Ilona Vetrova

Meanwhile, tensions are escalating at the St. Petersburg mansion. A ruthless rival, Stepan Zatrava, is attempting to take over Yevgenia Genrikhovna’s salon premises. Suddenly, the cook, Olga Stepanovna, discovers the body of the cleaning lady, Ilona Vetrova, in the living room. She had been strangled with a piece of twine. Her black hair had been cut with scissors and thrown on top of the body. Yevgenia Golts hires Makar’s partner, private detective Sergei Babkin. Yevgenia is certain that Zatrava orchestrated the murder as a means of intimidation.

Babkin begins interrogating the house’s inhabitants. He learns of Ilona’s cynical affair with Igor Bobrov. It turns out that Alla Dmitrievna and her friend Elena Semyonovna were paying Ilona extra. The cleaning lady danced naked in front of the guest house windows — the women were provoking the elderly Sergei Kirillovich into aggression, hoping to evict him from the estate. Babkin realizes that Zatrava was not involved in the murder. His men have an airtight alibi — his absence from the crime scene is documented.

After searching the murdered woman’s rented apartment, the detective discovers a peculiar black ledger — a notebook with supermarket receipts. The true motive is revealed. Ilona had caught the cook, Olga Stepanovna, systematically stealing the owner’s money. The cook had been saving for a comfortable life in Greece. Ilona began viciously blackmailing the woman, threatening to tell her mistress everything. To save her dream, Olga Stepanovna strangled the cleaning lady and imitated the assassin’s signature by cutting her hair. Realizing she could be exposed, the cook hastily fled abroad.

Child abduction

Events take a catastrophic turn when unknown assailants kidnap little Timofey during a walk at an elite kindergarten. The criminals snatched the child through a hole in the fence. Eduard, terrified, awaits ransom demands, but the phone remains silent. Natasha remains remarkably calm, claiming she intuitively senses her son is alive. Babkin travels to the outskirts of the city to visit Natasha’s ex-husband, Oleg Zinchuk. In a frank conversation, Oleg admits that Timofey is not his son. It was because of someone else’s child that he divorced Natasha.

Meanwhile, Makar Ilyushin, investigating Elina Golts’s forest route, reaches the village of Shatonino. The detective then travels to the neighboring village of Kalyadino. From local elders, he learns the outcome of a tragedy that occurred four years earlier. A beaten pregnant woman managed to escape her sectarian pursuers. At the edge of the forest, she went into premature labor. Natasha’s parents discovered her by chance. Elina gave birth to a boy, managed to tell him her name, asked that the baby not be given to strangers, and died of blood loss.

Natasha, who suffered from infertility, secretly took the newborn and named him Timofey. The family buried Elina’s body under a rowan tree. The truth was hidden from Oleg and the police. Years later, Oleg left the family, unwilling to raise someone else’s child. Natasha met Eduard Golts, Elina’s brother, by chance and married him.

The denouement of the tragedy

Makar returns to the mansion and tells Evgenia Genrikhovna the truth in the presence of Natasha, Eduard, and Babkin. The imperious woman, who for months hated the noisy Timofey and considered him a bad omen, learns the bitter truth. This boy is her own grandson, the son of the deceased Elina. She falls into shock. It was Evgenia who orchestrated the child’s kidnapping. Wanting to get rid of the annoying factor, she commissioned Boris, a mentally ill Afghanistan veteran, to steal the child. The man had been fanatically devoted to her ever since Golts paid for his drug addiction treatment.

Distraught with grief, Evgenia Genrikhovna races at high speed to Boris’s country house to save her grandson. Makar, Sergei, and Natasha follow. Boris sits on the porch with a rifle, guarding Timofey as he plays in the mud. Seeing a woman running across a field, the shell-shocked veteran assumes she’s an enemy threatening the child. Boris fires. Evgenia Genrikhovna falls to the ground, mortally wounded. Before she dies, she manages to touch her grandson’s blond hair. Boris is disarmed by the arriving detectives. In Moscow, Danila Solontsev is killed by his former follower, Ivan Kordybaylov. The repentant sectarian slits the Teacher’s throat in the entryway, avenging the ruined lives of so many.

True motives

After Yevgenia Golts’s funeral, detective Makar Ilyushin arrives at the deserted mansion to return the photographs. He suspects that Natasha was playing her own cruel game. Having learned whose family she had been adopted into, her daughter-in-law had been deliberately setting Timofey up to frighten her mother-in-law. Natasha knew of her obsessive belief in mystical symbols. The child would constantly jump out from around the corner, screaming, "I killed you!" This drove Yevgenia Genrikhovna to a nervous breakdown and forced her to make a fatal mistake.

Natasha skillfully orchestrated the kidnapping to destroy her mother-in-law and free her weak-willed husband from her influence. Makar openly accuses Natasha, but she responds softly and adamantly. The girl regrets nothing. Alone in the luxurious house, Natasha looks in the mirror and sees a blurry gray circle of the moon. She interprets this as a good sign.
