The novel "The Seven Days of Creation," written by French writer Marc Lévy in 2003, is an urban parable about the eternal struggle between good and evil. The plot transplants a theological debate to a modern metropolis, transforming the highest authorities into akin to bureaucratic corporations with a strict hierarchy. An unusual bet and the first steps of the envoys

The Almighty, who oversees the Angelic Coordination Center, and Satan, who heads the infernal agency, decide to end their mutual hostility. The dark side is represented by Lucas, a skilled demon who arrived from New York on behalf of the Minister of Communications, Blaise. Lucas is eager to sow chaos and destruction, seeing human vices as proof of the insignificance of the earthly world.

Sofia gets a job as a security inspector at a commercial port and finds shelter in the home of elderly journalist Wren Sheridan. Lucas checks into the luxurious Fairmont Hotel and steals a sports car from Pier 80. At a portside diner, Lucas catches the eye of waitress Matilda, whom Sofia has been caring for since a severe drug addiction. Here, the envoys meet for the first time: a glass falls from the counter and shatters into precisely seven pieces. They instantly feel an inexplicable attraction.

That evening, Sofia dines with Matilda at Liu Chan’s restaurant. Sensing a mortal threat, the angel manages to evacuate the patrons before a massive gas explosion. The owner is killed, and Matilda is seriously injured. Lucas arrives at the scene of the disaster and then accompanies Sofia to the hospital, inviting her out for donuts.

A clash of intentions and the emergence of sympathy

On the second day, Sophia transports the injured Matilda to Miss Sheridan’s house with the assistance of the longshoremen led by Foreman Mancha. That evening, they meet at a panoramic restaurant, where Blaise informs Lucas that his companion is an elite enemy agent.

Failure of plans and mortal danger

On the morning of the fourth day, Lucas sends Sofia hundreds of flowers. Police Inspector George Pilges investigates the fall of dockworker Gomez into the hold of the cargo ship Valparaiso and finds a burnt-out fuse, proving sabotage. At a general workers’ meeting, Lucas unexpectedly foils his own plan and publicly exposes Ed Hurt as the perpetrator of the provocation.

The dockers give chase to the hapless developer. Jewels hides the fugitive in his rag cart. To teach the con man a lesson, Lucas locks Hurt in the trunk and dumps the car into the bay, allowing the vice president to float out before the astonished eyes of Sofia. At this moment, the heroes discover each other’s true nature: the demon confesses to serving Satan, and the angel is horrified by the revealed truth.

Upon learning of the messengers’ rapprochement, Lucifer furiously demands Blaise eliminate Lucas. That evening, the demon finds Sophia and confesses that he sees her as his other half. In a traffic tunnel, Lucas’s brakes fail. Trying to save his companion, he skids and crashes into a wall.

In Chinatown, a mercenary fires five bullets at the fugitives. Lucas shields Sofia with his body and is seriously wounded in the shoulder. The appearance of blood indicates that love makes immortal beings vulnerable. Sofia takes the wounded man home, where Matilda stitches the wound with a needle and thread.

Testing feelings and saving the innocent

On the fifth day, the heroes realize they cannot return to their former existence. Wren Sheridan gives Lucas her deceased lover’s tweed jacket. Sofia offers Lucas a kind deed and helps the old man cross busy Polk Street, but the attempt causes physical torment to the demon.

Lucas then takes Sofia to a seedy alley where a pimp is beating up a prostitute named Sarah. The demon invites the angel to pass by and join in the evil. Sofia, unable to bear the pain, cries out for mercy. Lucas instantly attacks the attacker, neutralizes him, and takes Sarah to the clinic.

Overcoming the excruciating pain in her broken leg, Mathilde crawls through the flames to her unconscious owner. Lucas arrives and carries both women outside.

Inspector Pilges hides the lovers in a hotel near the airport under the assumed names of Oliver and Mary Sweet. Lucas finds a Bible in their room, and that night, the heroes share intimacy.

On the morning of the sixth day, Sophia decides to turn to the Creator on Mount Sinai. Before leaving, she visits little Thomas in the hospital: the angel Gabriel takes the boy’s soul, granting him eternal rest. At the Transamerica Tower, the gatekeeper Peter helps the fugitives pass through a secret portal, but mistakenly sends them to New York — to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Knowing that only hours remain before the seven-day deadline, Lucas treats his beloved to an unforgettable day in Manhattan. They stroll through Greenwich Village, create artificial rain in the parking lot, try on elegant outfits, and dine at a restaurant on Fifth Avenue. The lovers spend the night under a willow tree in Central Park.

Meanwhile, the spirit of the vagabond Jewels, revealed to be an angel in disguise, takes the soul of the deceased Ren, joining her in eternity. At dawn on the seventh day, Sofia awakens alone and finds a farewell letter. Lucas voluntarily goes to hell to be executed, sacrificing himself to save his beloved and bring victory to the good camp.

Sophia rejects Archangel Michael’s offer to return to heaven, declaring her choice of earthly love. Michael reports the emergency to God. The Almighty removes the partition between the offices and engages in an argument with Lucifer. The Creator stuns the devil with the news that they will become grandfathers, as Sophia is expecting twins.
