The symbolic return of Isaac Stern to Chinese land

SHANGHAI. The violin competition of Isaac Stern entered the final phase.

Almost four decades have passed since the legendary tour of Isaac Stern in China, during the most difficult period of the cultural revolution for the country. The result of an unforgettable trip was the documentary film From Mao to Mozart, for which the film crew accompanying the musician on the trip was subsequently awarded the Oscar. The holding of a memorial contest in Shanghai is a symbolic return of Isaac Stern to Chinese soil. The interest of the audience, which is crowded in the hall on each round, to the personality of a violin virtuoso is huge. The jury includes stars of the first magnitude: a unique American cellist with Chinese roots and a 17-time Grammy Award winner Yo-Yo Ma, outstanding teachers Zakhar Bron and Boris Kushnir, Maxim Vengerov, Daniel Kheifets. Logical and expected in this wonderful company was the presence of the son of the great musician - the famous conductor David Stern.

Among the six musicians who qualified for the finals of the competition are Sergei Dogadin, graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, laureate of prestigious competitions in Italy, Russia, and Germany. At different times, his teachers were Boris Kushnir, Vladimir Ovcharek, Zakhar Bron and father Andrei Dogadin - a famous violist, teacher and accompanist. Dogadin’s competitors in the fight for the winner’s laurels and an unprecedented cash prize are talented violinists from Europe and Asia. The jury’s verdict on the distribution of prizes will be announced on September 2.

In addition to the popular classics - the works of Mozart, Brahms and Schubert - a mandatory item in the competition program was the performance of the violin concert "Butterflies in Love" by Chen Gang and Hee Zhanghao. The main goal is to popularize the work of Chinese composers.
