Conductor of the year Theodor Currentzis according to listeners and Opernwelt magazine

BERLIN. The German magazine Opernwelt called Theodor Currentzis the conductor of the year.

Currentzis has never dreamed of a conductor’s wand, and without it now. The architecture of man and the spiritual space, which makes it possible to purify and meet his own passions. with which he associates music, do not need additional, albeit traditional, accessories. He does it because there is something to share with the audience, there is an opportunity for a sincere statement. In the meantime - an endless series of resonant premieres, festivals, interesting projects. And prizes confirming the nonrandomness of his professional self-identification.

This fall has been especially rewarding. On October 9, at the Berlin Konzerthaus, he was announced the winner of the ECHO Klassik 2016 award with Anna Netrebko, Grigory Sokolov, Olga Peretyatko, Maxim Emelyanychev, Asya Fateeva and Yuri Revich. The victory in the category “symphonic music of the XX-XXI centuries” was awarded for the performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “Sacred Spring”. In late September, the popular monthly magazine Opernwelt from Germany named the artistic director of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theater, the head of the musicAeterna orchestra, as the conductor of the year. Most of the music critics who took part in the poll from different countries voted for his candidacy, highly appreciating Verdi’s brilliant production of Macbeth at the Zurich Opera House (Opernhaus Zürich).

The collaboration between Currentzis and director of opera performances Barrie Kosky from Australia has been successful for both. Koski, according to Opernwelt, was named the best director. At the beginning of the year, Currentzis won the Kairos Award for Excellence in Contemporary Performing Arts, awarded by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation.
