The European Film Academy included the "Apprentice" Kiril Serebrennikov in the list of applicants for the main prize

WROCLAW. Serebrennikov’s painting “The Apprentice” was among the nominees for the main European film award.

A new film by Cyril Serebrennikov will be released in Russia only in mid-autumn. In the meantime, he actively takes part in various creative competitions. Francois Chalet Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, victory in the category "Best Director" at the last Kinotavr. A few days ago, Pupil was included in the list of the best fifty films of the European Film Awards 2016 along with the films Almodovar (Pedro Almodóvar), Friars (Stephen Frears), Verhoevena (Paul Verhoeven). Serebrennikov is not a newcomer to the competitive field. His theatrical and cinematic works have repeatedly become nominees and prize winners at the most prestigious festivals: in Venice, Rome, Karlovy Vary, Avignon, Vienna.

The Pupil’s chances of participating in the fight for the main award will be announced in early November, when the list of semi-finalists will be announced. For 28 years of the existence of the award, only one Russian film became the owner of the “European Oscar”. In 1993, he won the tape Nikita Mikhalkov "Urga - the territory of love." Adapted to Russian realities, the play of playwright Marius Von Meyenburg “Marius Von Meyenburg” was originally staged and sold out on the stage of the Gogol Center led by Serebryannikov, after which the director made a decision to film it. The protagonist of the play is a 16-year-old religious fanatic who ignored the biblical commandments about love for one’s neighbor, mercy and tolerance, but perceived the sacred texts as a tool to deal with those whose morality casts doubt on him. Against the backdrop of events taking place in the world, the relevance of the plot of obscurantism, the unpreparedness of secular society for its extreme manifestations and the inability to effectively resist it is becoming increasingly apparent. Therefore, the Serebrennikov film has good chances of victory and the sincere interest of a European audience in it.
