Basic materials for the production of laptop cases

Of course, given the modern trend towards natural materials, a case made of metal or with a soft-touch coating is especially valued by buyers, however, other materials are also used to produce cases for laptops .

1. A mixture of ABS plastic and polycarbonate. A mixture of these two materials has proven itself and is very widely used in the production of body materials. Plastic is the cheapest and most popular material for making phone cases. ABS plastic is significantly lower in cost than polycarbonate, but it is characterized by such disadvantages as fragility and therefore is used in conjunction with polycarbonate. This mixture is very convenient to manufacture; it can be poured into any desired shape and does not need to be painted before sale, which allows manufacturers to reduce production costs. Sometimes, manufacturers can slightly refine the model and make only the bottom from the mixture, and decorate the laptop lid with relief or a special coating. The downside of the mixture is its weight. Therefore, in order to make it lighter, manufacturers add fiberglass or carbon fiber to the mixture.

2. Metal. This material is used to make more expensive laptop cases . The most popular are magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy and steel. Moreover, if a magnesium alloy is suitable for casting, then an aluminum alloy can be processed only by milling and stamping. However, milling is very expensive, and stamping can only produce a flat part. That is why, despite the fact that all three materials (plastic, aluminum and magnesium) are supplied at a price of about 3 thousand dollars per ton, the cost of processing metal alloys is much higher and more complex, which affects the final cost of the laptop case .

3. A middle option called “metallic finish” is also used. This means that a thin metal sheet is placed on top of a plastic base. This finish pleases the buyer’s eye and slightly compensates for the hardness of the plastic.

4. In addition, manufacturers use spraying. This makes it possible to decorate the laptop case. A special soft-touch coating is often used, as well as ceramic or glossy coating.

When choosing a laptop, proceed from your needs and requirements. For example, if you need a work machine for school and office, feel free to take a laptop with a plastic body. If you need an ultrabook with which you can easily and quickly move around the city, be prepared to pay more for premium case material. It all depends on your personal preferences and financial capabilities. You have to understand that while aluminum alloy laptop cases are nice and lightweight, magnesium alloy cases are $100 cheaper.
