Camlocks:
letter types A–F, body materials and quick-connect principle
The cam coupling was developed for liquid transfer applications — it allows for manual assembly without tools. Today, cam locks are widely used in fuel trucks, pumping stations, and in food and chemical production. Beginners are often confused by the different cam lock types — let’s take a closer look. How does a lock work?
The coupling consists of two parts. The adapter is a smooth, grooved fitting, and the coupling is the mating part with two hinged levers and an O-ring inside.
To connect the parts, the adapter is inserted into the coupling until it stops, and then the levers are lowered. The jaws engage the groove and pull the halves together, pressing the end face against the sealing ring. Connecting and disconnecting takes just a few seconds — all without any tools.
What do the letters mean?
Adapters and couplings have letter designations indicating their design features. Type A is an adapter with internal threads, type F is an external thread, and type E has a hose-mounted stud. Couplings are marked with B for external threads, D for internal threads, and C for hose-mounted studs. Plugs are also available separately: DC covers the coupling, and DP fits onto the adapter.
Different combinations allow for specific tasks. For example, the E and C pair is suitable for connecting hose to hose, while the A and B pair helps connect a pipeline to a mating threaded assembly.
What materials are they made of?
The camlock body is made from various materials depending on its purpose and the working environment:
- Aluminum is a lightweight and inexpensive option. Suitable for handling fuel, oils, and industrial water.
- Stainless steel is the optimal choice for food production, chemical facilities and coastal areas.
- Brass - used in water and air systems where corrosion resistance is important but high loads are not present.
- Polypropylene is indispensable when working with acids and alkalis, but is sensitive to impacts and high temperatures.
The seal is selected separately: nitrile for petroleum products, EPDM for hot water, Viton for aggressive chemicals.
Dimensions and pressure
Camlocks are available in a variety of sizes. However, there’s an important rule: the larger the diameter, the lower the permissible pressure. For example, small connections can withstand up to 20 bar, while six-inch models are rated for only a few bars.
Remember: camlocks are designed for pumping, not for use in high-pressure systems. For pressure circuits, other types of connectors are used.
Operating Rules
To ensure long-lasting and reliable operation of the camlock, lower both levers simultaneously, otherwise the clamping force will be uneven. Secure the levers with a cotter pin on vibrating lines. It’s important to replace the sealing ring promptly as it wears out. It’s also a good idea to cap the free ends during storage to protect the mounting surfaces from sand and mechanical damage.
