But it is not enough to receive a canvas with an image; it needs to be brought to its logical conclusion: post-printing and stretched onto a stretcher.

Many people don’t even think about the last point until they get the printed work in their hands. What to do with the resulting canvas? - pull it onto the base. But this stage has its own subtleties, which we will talk about in this article.

Stretching on a subframe: features

Inept actions at this seemingly simple stage can harm the printed image, both physically and in how the painting on canvas will look in the interior.

To avoid troubles, it is better to entrust the stretching to professionals or order printing of paintings on canvas in studios that offer stretching on a stretcher, then you will pick up the finished work. To make it look beautiful and delight you with its beauty for a long time, you should choose the right stretcher, and it can be modular or solid.

In the modular version, you can adjust the tension of the canvas, but in the blind version - not. A weak base for the canvas can cause distortion, which will also be reflected in the image.

Kinds

There are two types of tension on the subframe:

• classic (standard) - the canvas is stapled to the side parts of the frame, after which the picture is placed in a baguette frame
• gallery - the edges of the canvas are wrapped behind the sides of the base, and secured on the reverse side; the finished work is not framed, it is placed on the wall as is

When stretching the base with the image, you should be careful and ensure that the threads are always parallel to the strips. In addition, it is important that the subframe does not fit into the frame too tightly, since it can change its size under the influence of temperature and moisture: the canvas may sag over time and will need to be reupholstered.

Particular care is required when working with paintings on synthetic canvas, as it does not stretch well and can be damaged if handled carelessly.

Remember : its strength and appearance largely depend on how correctly the painting is stretched onto the stretcher.
