Glass walkways and greenhouse galleries near a country house
A country house rarely exists within a single box of walls. Nearby are the garden, the bathhouse, the guest house, and the open terrace, and in between are a few meters of air, rain, and snow. A glass walkway or a conservatory-cum-gallery bridges this gap: step out of the kitchen and, in a few steps, find yourself among the plants or at the bathhouse door, without having to pull on a jacket along the way.
The light here is different — softer, with longer hours of day. In the morning, the gallery is filled with sunlight; in the evening, a garden can be discerned through the glass. The space ceases to be a service corridor and becomes a place for sitting down, drinking tea, and keeping potted plants.
What are the most common formats?
A gallery-style greenhouse along the façade is the most relaxed approach. It stretches along the side of the house, catching light from one or two sides and expanding the living area without requiring a separate foundation "island" in the middle of the yard. Inside, a narrow passageway and a strip for plants or a bench against the glass are typically left.
A glass bridge between the house and the bathhouse or guest block offers a simpler and more rigid solution. Wet snow and puddles no longer dictate the route. The structure is narrower than a gallery, supported by pillars or a strip; the floor is sloped, and the roof junction between the two buildings is calculated in advance to prevent meltwater from seeking a gap in the wall.
A winter garden connected to a terrace behaves differently. In summer, some of the panels slide aside, merging the room with the street; in winter, a closed volume remains, complete with a table and even light. Corner and U-shaped extensions are appropriate where the house faces the courtyard with multiple facades: they consolidate the view and shield the windy corner of the property.
The format is chosen based on actual paths, not a pretty picture. If the path from the kitchen to the bathhouse is shorter than five or six meters, a bridge pays for itself faster than a wide gallery. If you want air and plants, a gallery or winter garden is more logical.
The northwestern climate dictates its own conditions. Glazing country houses in St. Petersburg is often considered for the long, damp autumn, low winter sun, and sudden thaws. Here, designs with dense insulation, adequate ventilation, and a roof that doesn’t trap snow at the wall junction are advantageous.
Light, warmth and summer comfort
The orientation of a room determines its character. South and southwest receive the most sun, and without protection from overheating, the air becomes heavy by midday. East is softer: bright in the morning and calmer during the day. North provides almost no heat, but evenly illuminates the plants and is not blinding.
In summer, roof overhangs, external screens, blinds in the space between panes, and glass with a solar control layer are used. In winter, it’s more important to retain heat — a double-glazed unit, a warm spacer frame, and a tightly sealed sash. Then you can sit near the glazing without feeling the cold blanket of glass.
The floor in the entryway should be warmer than usual. Tiles on an unheated concrete slab draw in cold air in winter, and a threshold flush with the house eliminates tripping and makes it easier to walk with a cart.
Ventilation shouldn’t be left to just one window, just for luck. Supply valves, slot ventilation, and at least a weak exhaust circuit remove moisture after watering and wet shoes. In a large gallery, a quiet duct fan with a humidity sensor is sometimes installed — without the hum common in industrial units. A 40-50 mm thick underfloor heating system ensures comfortable footing, even in January.
Materials and structures that are connected to the house
The profile can be made of plastic, aluminum with a thermal break, or wood. Plastic is easier to maintain and is common for residential extensions. Aluminum with a thermal break supports wide spans and heavy doors — it’s used for sliding walls. Wood is warm to the touch and to the eye, but requires moisture protection at the joints exposed to the outside.
Glass is selected based on the intended application. Energy-saving coatings return some heat to the room; multifunctional coatings combine winter savings with summer solar blockage. Tempered or laminated glass is used for roofing: it prevents shards from falling when struck. For façade sections, the thickness of the glass units is typically 32–40 mm; the designer determines the exact installation based on wind and snow conditions.

Sliding systems save space and open up almost the entire opening; hinged systems are easier to seal and repair hardware. In rainy climates, sliding tracks require drainage to prevent standing water in the track. The joint with the house wall is sealed with extensions and a compound compatible with wood, plaster, or brick; otherwise, a dark streak will appear on the slope after a season.
The roof is a different matter. A flat, slightly pitched roof doesn’t block second-story windows, but it requires careful waterproofing. A pitched roof sheds snow more easily. How to fill a transition so that it is used
An empty glass hallway quickly turns into a boot storage area. A narrow line of 40-80 cm tall pots, a shelf for herbs, a thin trellis for climbing plants — and the passageway is already alive. The clear width is kept at least 90-100 cm, so two people can pass each other without bumping into a pot.
The furniture is moisture-resistant and lightweight: rattan on a frame, aluminum, or oiled wood. A full-width sofa is rare here; a bench against the glass and a couple of armchairs are more appropriate. Low lighting is preferable for evenings — sconces, hidden step lighting where the floor level changes. A ceiling spotlight glares off the glass and obscures the view into the garden.
If the route leads to the sauna, space should be left in advance for hooks, a bench for changing shoes, and a cabinet with ventilation slots. A narrow countertop and moisture-resistant electrical outlets are logical near the kitchen entrance; these are installed before the final finishing to avoid chasing the porcelain tiles. Rigid glass surfaces reflect sound, so a runner, textiles on the bench, and a few large plants reduce the echo — conversations over tea don’t ring out like they do in an empty room.
From concept to acceptance of work
First, the house is referenced: the finished floor elevations, the base material, and the drainage and cable routes. The measurement captures not only the length and width but also any façade distortions. On a slope, the posts and grillage are measured separately — otherwise, the frame will "float" after the first winter.
Then the design is agreed upon. The gallery height, glass division, and profile color either support the building or undermine it. The roof should not obstruct second-story windows or escape routes. If the heating is shared, a decision is immediately made whether to incorporate the floor heating circuit into the boiler or route it to a separate thermostat.
During construction, they check what will be hidden by the finish: waterproofing of abutments, insulation of the base, condensate drainage from the profile, and access to the gutters. After installation, they check the tightness of the sashes, drainage from the drain, and the absence of drafts around the perimeter.
On a cold day, a thermal imaging camera can be helpful — it reveals cracks in slopes and corners. Maintenance is simpler than usual: the glass should be cleaned with mild, non-abrasive cleaners, the hardware should be lubricated once a year with a window hinge compound, and the gutters should be cleared of leaves in the spring and fall. The sealant on the wall of the house should be inspected once a season; a small crack is easier to repair than a stain on the ceiling.
Before signing the contract, it’s important to specify who is responsible for the foundation and waterproofing, the glass package formula and hardware class, how water drainage from the roof and guides is arranged, and whether there are any drawings of the abutment joints. During the acceptance process, each sash is opened, the threshold is checked for levelness and drainage operation, and the glass and profile data sheets are retained — when replacing the glass package years later, paperwork saves weeks of correspondence.
The glass walkway or conservatory-gallery is built on a simple coincidence: the structure coincides with the family’s usual routes. This way, the path through the garden is unaffected by the weather, and the house and the garden become one.
