Posters as an Art Genre:
From the Street Poster to the Museum

The playbill was born as pure advertising: to sell tickets, fill the auditorium, and announce a product. But just a couple of decades after the advent of color printing, collectors began ripping the sheets off street signs, and today those same works hang in the Pushkin Museum and are sold at auction for prices their patrons couldn’t even imagine. We explore how the playbill became an art form, which names defined the genre, and who continues this tradition today.

Paris, 19th century: the birth of a genre

The modern poster emerged in the second half of the 19th century, when the development of multicolor printing made large-scale color print runs possible. The Frenchman Jules Chéret is considered the father of the genre: he was the first to understand that a street poster should function through imagery, not text. His light, dancing figures against a bright background transformed Parisian streets into open-air galleries.

The city reciprocated. Billboards became part of the cityscape, publishers printed sheets by the thousands, and the public began to distinguish authors by their style. Advertising for the first time gained an artistic reputation: critics wrote about it, it was discussed in salons, and people began collecting it.

Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha: the poster becomes art

The turning point is considered to be 1891, when Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created a poster for the Moulin Rouge cabaret. Flat splashes of color, a boldly cut composition, and the unadorned nightlife of Montmartre: this was no longer an advertisement with an image, but an artist’s statement. Lautrec’s posters were taken down from walls at night to be hung in homes, and today they are part of the collections of the world’s leading museums.

At the same time, Alphonse Mucha was establishing the other end of the genre. His posters for the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre, with their ornamentation, long lines, and gold, became a manifesto of Art Nouveau and set the fashion for the next decade. It is precisely these two poles — expression and decorativeness — that the genre remains grounded in today: any modern concert poster can be placed somewhere between Lautrec and Mucha.

Russian Poster: Constructivism and Film Posters

In the 1920s, the center of boldness shifted to Russia. Alexander Rodchenko and the Stenberg brothers created movie posters that are still studied in design schools around the world: diagonal composition, photomontage, geometry, and the use of type as an image. The poster stopped depicting a scene from the film and began to convey its energy.

These discoveries have long outlived their era. Constructivist techniques pop up today in album covers, festival identities, and techno party posters, often unbeknownst to the creators, who are convinced they came up with the idea themselves. The century-old school lives on.

The Twentieth Century: From the Polish School to Rock Posters

After the war, the genre was developed by the Polish poster school: metaphor instead of literal imagery, pictorial freedom, and an artist’s signature style in state commissions. In the 1960s, psychedelic posters for American rock concerts, with their fluid typography that required puzzle-like solving, made their mark. The further they went, the more obvious it became: posters could be art while still selling tickets.

Museums have cemented this status. Poster collections are found in all major global collections, and exhibitions of posters draw queues no less impressive than those of paintings. The genre, which began with the advertising pillar, has finally found its place in exhibition halls.

Where to watch the posters today

Poster collections have long been a part of museum life. The Pushkin Museum showcased French posters from the turn of the century in its "Afishemania" exhibition, drawn from its own collection, and works by Lautrec and Mucha are regularly featured in combined exhibitions. Museum online archives and virtual galleries allow visitors to view posters in high resolution from the comfort of their homes, a great boon for the genre: posters are once again accessible to everyone, as they once were on the streets of Paris.

It’s a special pleasure to look at old posters through the eyes of a designer. Notice how the composition is constructed, where the text is placed, how many colors the author used, and what they omitted from the layout for the sake of clarity. Century-old posters read like a textbook: they reveal that the rules of the genre have barely changed, only the printing technique.

Who makes posters today?

The genre still has its creators, but the profession has changed its name: instead of poster artist, it’s now a graphic designer. The goal is the same as for Chéret and Lautrec: to convey the essence of an event in a second and make passersby stop. Only the technology has changed: the print run is now digital, not lithographed. The lessons of the old masters sound unexpectedly practical. A single, powerful image instead of a program recitation: that’s what Lautrec teaches. Color as mood, not coloring: that’s Chéret. Type as part of the image, not a caption beneath it: that’s Rodchenko and the Stenbergs. A metaphor that’s more captivating than a photograph: that’s the Polish school.

Therefore, familiarity with the history of the genre is useful not only for art historians but also for clients. When an organizer understands that a poster can be a statement, the conversation with the designer changes: instead of a request to "make it beautiful," the goal becomes to convey the nature of the event. It is at this level that layouts are born that are a shame to throw away after the concert.

Briefly about the main thing

Over the course of a century and a half, the poster has evolved from an advertising sheet to a museum exhibit, without losing its professional role: it still sells events. Chéret gave the genre color, Lautrec the status of art, Mucha the decorative school, and the Constructivists geometry and typeface. The heirs of this tradition are still working today, but instead of lithographic stone, they use digital printing and social media. A good poster, just like a hundred years ago, remains a work of art you want to take home from the wall.
