An alternative work in the visual arts and photography is a work that goes beyond the boundaries of an established and universally accepted concept of reality and an art object in its form, content and semantic decision. Most often, artists present it to us with the prefix “anti”: anti-landscape, anti-nude… However, in contemporary art there are alternative views and alternative approaches to creating an artwork within the existing types and genres, as well as a demonstration of the alternative as a choice, which is more everything is inherent in the possibilities of photography, which has a special technical, creative and semantic nature, while at the same time preserving its material character and reproductive function with respect to reality.
Each of the artists of the Alternative project, headed by Galina and Andronik Poloz and implemented by the Creative Workshop of the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Creative Union of Artists of Russia with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Academy of Arts, has its own direction of creativity and various aesthetic preferences. However, in this project, all authors turned to photography to show the variety of modern "alternatives", to demonstrate an alternative vision and rethinking of traditional genres, techniques and schemes in art. A modern photographic camera has facilitated the task of formulating an artistic statement without concentrating much attention on the technical side of the photography process.
As a result, we received nineteen dossiers, where in the preceding photographs the project participants and art critics formulated a personal attitude to the concept of “alternative” in the author’s work.
Alexei Avramchik, developing and enriching the content of foreshortening techniques of photography of the twentieth century, plunges our eyes into the space of material objects of technical civilization created by him on square photographic prints.
Ivan Zaikin analyzes an alternative view of architectural forms that are the result of human intervention in the natural environment and become important, both in general and in its details, elements of influence on the formation of society.
Sergey Borisov in his photographs visualizes an atmosphere of alternative “unreal” reality full of paradoxes, mesmerizing a fantastic post-modern game in the modern space of half-naked and naked models with objects of cult worship of the historical past and avant-garde culture.
For Konstantin Markov, reflected, lying on the surface of the water and on mirror coatings, is an alternative to the real, transforming reality, sometimes leading to a complete abstraction.
Instant photographs of a real living environment in the works of Elena Pandelis are transformed into photographic prints of the space facing us, when both the photographer and the camera, and objects filling the space, freeze for a moment only, then to come back into motion.

In the works of Catherine Freud from the “Back in Black” series, a female figure is invariably present, which is a kind of emotional and sensual scale: either facing a revealing impartial light that allows you to see the expression on the face and the smallest details of the linen, then dissolving in the darkness obscuring her body, then completely submerged in the "pool of seamy alternative reality" of darkness and devoid of visible expressions of feelings and emotions.
Catherine Freud - ALTERNATIVE. BACK IN BLACK-
Ekaterina Borodulina turns to different genres of photography, revealing in a real urban, industrial and rural environment, the multiplicity and variability of paths, the diversity of relationships, relationships and interactions inherent in both natural and man-made environments. Here, the person is faced with the question of choosing a path, which in the end is the only alternative to the surrounding "chaos".
For Konstantin Khudyakov, the plane of a photographic digital image has the property to obey the artist’s magical will and reproduce an alternative multidimensional picture of modern life reality. The author introduces the fourth dimension into his illusory to the smallest details of work - time, which, without destroying the inner harmony inherent in a genuine work of art, allows you to show the course of human life and fill the paintings with historical references, subtle social reflections and experiences.
Artem Malykhin, in the everyday genre and staged photography, turns to a social topic, demonstrating behavioral alternatives to modern life.
Dmitry Sobolev, refusing visuals, recognizability and portrait psychologism, forms an alternative to reality in the production, depriving the model present in the photograph of the person. Thus, the author presents the viewer with the opportunity to simulate the situation himself and recreate the psychological portrait of the heroine.
Maxim Grinash’s approach to the disclosure of the topic is determined by the presence of two conditional: internal and external points of view on everything that exists around us, including being. The author covers many areas, analyzes and demonstrates to the viewer the collisions of various principles that are invariably present in the surrounding world and mark the process of development of civilization.
Vadim Ovsyannikov demonstrates an alternative to an active life cycle, introducing us to human remains hidden by a meter layer of earth.
Andronic Poloz analyzes the behavioral alternatives of modern man, demonstrating in photographs the world of human preferences and relationships.

Children’s world for Galina Poloz is an alternative to the adult world. This is even more felt in a country where eternal summer. In her photographs - carefree children under the tropical sun on the ocean coast, playing and communicating, exist in a special space and society, with their own relationships and laws. However, nature and elders are forced to transfer them from the world of play and freedom to another - the real world.
Poloz Galina - AN ALTERNATIVE LOOK-
Alexei Prusakov in his works demonstrates his understanding of the artistic alternative. He contrasts the captured natural harmony of the landscape, landscapes with Russian wooden churches, architectural ensembles and naive creativity to formal expressions of harmony, devoid of inner spirituality.
Prusakov Aleksey - Alternative-
Tatyana Skrinskaya refuses to consciously choose the ideal frame in favor of revealing harmonic relationships accidentally discovered by a traveler in front of the camera lens. Harmony, which does not lie in natural nature, but arises as if unintentionally, when natural forms and architectural monuments are combined into a single whole with the objects of modern civilization as a result of human activity and then fall into the lens.
Closeups of Marina Soboleva allow us to feel ownership of the sacrament of penetration into the natural world in order to witness the life and death of its plant forms, so fragile and unprotected.
Ekaterina Finogenova shows people with special needs who live in an alternative world towards us, full of their sincere feelings and feelings, reflected in their actions and on their faces. Becoming actors, they are revealed in a new quality when the emotions and actions caused by the game allow them to be better understood by others, enter into spiritual contact with them and feel their involvement in a single human life.
Vladimir Khvostov builds before us a number of geographical alternatives: Peru and Baikal. These territories, characterized by their vivid natural difference, with opposite social patterns of residents, are united by an invisible thread of benevolent human relations, which are instantly built when communicating between people.
Khvostov Vladimir - Alternative
Thus, the authors of the Alternative project have demonstrated various complementary approaches to photographic art practice, which broadens our understanding of the possibilities of photography in the postmodern era, its aesthetics and place in the cultural space of the new millennium. The project removes the apparent contradictions between these creative approaches, implemented in real practice, based on the features of art schools, social experience and aesthetic preferences of the authors of photo works.
