The young sculptor Gurgen Petrosyan, already noticeable in the modern artistic life of Moscow, is being exhibited for the first time in St. Petersburg at the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art. The structure of its small but capacious exhibition “Dividuum” includes works from three cycles: “Heroes and Gods”, “Models of Yves Klein” and “Reds”. They are united by a common theme - comprehension of what is happening with a person, loss of individuality.
In today’s contradictory flow of existence, a once holistic, self-sufficient individual becomes, by Gilles Deleuze’s definition, a dividual — a divisible, multifaceted person who loses integrity and self-identity.
The dissolution of personality, the loss of subjectivity, the manipulation of man, the simulation of reality — all of these problems and the symptoms of today concern Gurgen Petrosyan.
In the cycle “Heroes and Gods”, he fixes how former heroes and gods take on comical plump forms. Today they are no longer heroes, but “machines of desire”. In essence, this is a plastic commentary on our era, a metaphor for a consumer society imitating sublime, ascending to antiquity, postures and gestures.
The topic of dehumanization and depersonalization also includes works from the cycle “Yves Klein’s Models”. Shareholder Yves Klein used nude female bodies painted in blue as a printed form, as a consumable. The flattened plastic of the bodies and faces of the models at the time of the imprint is shown by Petrosyan on the reverse side of the canvas, as if through a glass wall. So the artist expresses an unexpected feeling of discomfort that a woman feels.
Works from the “Red” series add dramatic accents to the general theme.
Gurgen Petrosyan’s exhibition “Dividuum” in the Erarta Museum opens the world of a modern thinking sculptor, who does not repeat the standards of good taste of the modernist era, looking for non-trivial solutions, his own images and metaphors that are adequate to our time.
