State Museum of Architecture named after A.V. Shchuseva represents the exhibition project “The Epoch of Modernity”, which will be the first in a long time attempt to formulate an opinion about a possible permanent exhibition. The museum was forced to close it in 1991, when the exhibits were urgently transferred from the Donskoy Monastery to the building on Vozdvizhenka.
The modern era is a complex, contradictory and full of unusual creative solutions period of development of Russian art. The Museum of Architecture has a rich collection of objects created at the turn of the XIX - XX centuries.
A real panorama of the many-sided Art Nouveau style will unfold before the visitors, which will make it possible to trace its evolution from the mid-19th century until the 1917 revolution. The first section, devoted to the previous eclectic period, will show drawings and drawings of GUM, the Moscow City Duma, as well as the author’s model of the dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior by architect Konstantin Ton. The artistic component will be complemented by a story about the features of engineering structures and building materials that were widely used in the construction of buildings of the end of the last century. The main part of the exhibition will be devoted to the diversity of types of buildings of the epoch of modernity - urban mansions and apartment houses, commercial buildings, banks, museums, theaters and temple architecture. Today it is impossible to imagine Moscow without the building of the Museum of Fine Arts named after A.S. Pushkin and the shop "Mure and Meriliz" - the current TSUM, mansions Derozhinskoy and Morozov, Kazan and Yaroslavl stations.
The works of such eminent architects as Fyodor Shekhtel, the Vesnin brothers, Valentin Dubovskoy, Illarion Ivanov-Shchits, Roman Klein and many others in their entirety and diversity will present the Moscow architectural school of this time. In addition to the works of domestic architects, visitors will also be able to get acquainted with the works of the master of the French Art Nouveau Hector Guimara.
With the project “The Epoch of Modernity”, the Museum opens a public discussion about how the museum of architecture in the modern world should take on itself and what functions it should take upon itself.
Visitors will enjoy a large-scale cultural and educational program: walking tours in Moscow, lectures, excursions, creative activities for family audiences, musical concerts and theatrical performances.
