"Years." Exhibition of works by Boris Nepomniachtchi

Boris Nepomnyashchy is a well-known etching master who, during his 40-year career, has created many significant works made in this complex and so rare graphic technique today. A deep philosopher, he combined in his work reflections on life and death, the complexities and dramatic nature of human existence.

Boris Lvovich was born in the city of Kiev. After graduating from the V.I. Mukhina Leningrad Higher Art and Industrial School in 1971, to this day he continues fruitful creative activity, raising in his art topics that have been important at all times - the relationship of people, the meaning of life, freedom. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1975, for his art B. Nepomnyashchy was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. His work is appreciated by experts, his works are in collections of leading state museums, galleries and private collections in Russia and foreign countries, in particular, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum and the Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The exhibition in the halls of the Academy of Arts most fully demonstrates the work of the master in recent decades. The exhibition features more than 100 works by the artist, created from 1988 to 2018. These are etchings on biblical themes, still lifes and portraits made using the gouache and pastel techniques, as well as graphic philosophical cycles such as “In Search of Truth”, “The Court of Fools”, “The Ship of Fools”, “Carousel of Love”, “Absurdity of Fashion”, “Full Beauty,” “Passengers.”

The world of images of N. V. Gogol and F. M. Dostoevsky, the ups and downs of the fate of their heroes occupy a special place in the art of Nepomniachtchi. The artist repeatedly turns to illustrating the works of these iconic writers. The exhibition introduces the works performed in the technique of etching and pencil drawing. Sheets of the artist amaze with their phantasmagoricity and impeccability, deep philosophical content. He subtly feels the complexity of the relationship of the heroes, elegantly and with inherent perfection conveys their emotional states. The images, as if likened to a web, correspond to the nodal moments of literary works. Nepomnyaschi masterly works in the technique of etching, achieving completeness and clarity of each part of the work, each stroke.

The high artistic significance of the works of B. L. Nepomniachtchi allows us to compare them with the works of etching masters included in the golden fund of world art.

The exposition acquaints the artist with philosophical understanding of life and death, the loss and gaining of the meaning of life. Boris Nepomniachtchi raises questions of human existence about moral values. This is a modern view of life with its contradictions. "Years" of the artist is his return to the eternal themes that have gained new interpretations after decades.
