Illustrations to the works of A.S. Pushkin in the collection of the Kaluga Museum represents only one of the sides of reflection in the Russian fine art of the poet’s genius. Approving the principle of dialogue of arts, the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts throughout the course of 2019 holds a series of exhibitions dedicated to the 220th birthday of the poet, opening to visitors a wonderful world of the early 19th century.

One of the most important forms of artists’ response to the talent of A.S. Pushkin began to create illustrations for his literary works. The funds of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts contain illustrations made by Soviet artists V.A. Favorsky, A.I. Kravchenko and F.D. Konstantinov.

Two illustrations for the Pushkin drama "Boris Godunov" and a screen saver for "Mozart and Salieri", made by the outstanding artist of the book V.A. Favorsky entered the museum in 1970 from the All-Union Production Plant. The artist worked on Boris Godunov from 1954 to 1955, paying particular attention to the characters of the tragedy. Each illustration is accompanied by a unique ornament that conveys the background of events.

A complete series of illustrations by A.I. Kravchenko for the novel "Queen of Spades" consists of 7 woodcuts created in 1937 - 1940. The Kaluga leaf is an illustration for the first chapter of the novel depicting a young countess in Versailles in the company of the ladies and the Duke of Orleans, at a round table playing the fashionable card game Pharaoh. Woodcut A.I. Kravchenko entered the museum in 1970 as a gift from the artist A. Zhukov.

From the extensive Pushkin woodcut cycle of F. D. Konstantinov, the collections of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts contain 11 illustrations for the poems The Bronze Horseman and Poltava, which were received in 2003 from the Russian Cultural Foundation. The power and grandeur of the “city of Petrov” is emphasized by woodcuts depicting ships sailing along the banks of the Neva and the “Admiralty Needle” - the spire of the Main Admiralty, the first Russian shipbuilding shipyard on the Baltic Sea.
