Study and conservation of Vincent van Gogh’s painting "Red Vineyards at Arles. Montmajour"

The State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, together with LG SIGNATURE, is launching a large-scale project to study and preserve the world famous painting by Vincent van Gogh “Red Vineyards in Arles. Montmajour ". This painting is one of the most important works in the artist’s work and the only work of van Gogh purchased during his lifetime, which is documented. Since entering the Pushkin Museum. Alexander Pushkin in 1948, the painting "Red Vineyards…" never left the walls of the museum, it adorns the exposition of the Art Gallery of the countries of Europe and America of the XIX-XX centuries.

For the first time in the 130-year history of the painting, it will be studied using modern natural science methods. The restorers of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts A.S. Pushkin, together with the partners of the museum, will conduct a study of painting materials using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microscopy with energy dispersive analysis, and also clarify what colors the painting was painted with, how the artist mixed them, and which of them changed over time. An X-ray analysis of the painting will be carried out, and for the first time in the history of the study of "Red Vineyards…" we will be able to see the changes made by the artist himself in the process of creating the painting. Were all the figures originally drawn by the artist, or were they added or modified later? How did van Gogh ship the painting to Brother Theo from Arles to Paris? And most importantly, the specialists of the Pushkin Museum will have to decidewhat steps to take next to preserve for future generations this extremely fragile but incredibly important painting “Red Vineyards in Arles. Montmajour ".

We will be looking for answers to all these questions literally before your eyes. Viewers will have the opportunity to look into the real restoration workshops of the museum and see how the painting goes through all stages of research.

The research and restoration processes of the painting will also be featured in the 4-part documentary The Secret of the Red Vineyards, which is being produced by LG SIGNATURE and will soon be available on the IVI platform. The film was directed by Ivan Vdovin, winner of an award at the International Festival of Advertising Producers in Cannes (2018) and author of such documentary works as “Zakura”, “Who is Russia.
