May 12, 19:00 Film screening in the Nagornaya gallery. Viewers will be presented with the film “Color of Pomegranate” directed by Sergei Parajanov (USSR, 1968, 74 min.). “Color of Pomegranate” (“Sayat-Nova”) is a poetic film parable by Sergei Parajanov about the great Armenian poet, master of love lyrics, Sayat-Nova, shot in 1968 at the “Armenfilm” film studio. The author’s name is “Sayat-Nova”.
For more than 150 years, the life and work of the famous poet Sayat-Nova has been the subject of discussion among writers, linguists, historians and philosophers. Nevertheless, many important circumstances and details of his life are still not fully understood and studied. In many ways, this is the fault of the poet himself - the great master of literary hoaxes, the author of his unique coded language. There is not much reliable information left - these are random facts from the poet’s songs, pages of manuscripts compiled by him and his son Ogan, manuscripts transcribed by Sayat-Nova, written Georgian sources, memoirs of contemporaries who knew him personally, and paraphrases.
In the film “Pomegranate Color”, consisting of several miniatures, an attempt was made to show the spiritual world of the medieval Armenian poet Sayat-Nova who wrote in Armenian, Georgian and Azerbaijani languages, the story of his love, the poet’s attitude to religion, secular authorities, and people. In the absence of the usual literary monologue, all the decisions of the author of the film lie in a purely visual sphere. “The Color of the Pomegranate” became the main film of Parajanov: these are the revived medieval Armenian frescoes that turned cinema into poetry.
The fate of the film “Pomegranate Color” was not easy: the world audience will see the film only in the early 80’s. From the miraculously preserved working materials, the paintings in the 90s will make an “authorial version”, and the director Levon Grigoryan, who worked as an assistant in the film, will assemble his “Memories of Sayat-Nova.”
Interesting facts: Direct links to the film “Pomegranate Color” are contained in Madonna’s video for the song “Bedtime Story”. Fragments from the film are also used in the video “God Is God” of the group “Juno Reactor” and in the clip “Yarom Bia” of the Iranian group “Kiiosk”. And in 2015, electronic musician Nicholas Jaar created an alternative sound design for the film and published it on Youtube.
After the show, a discussion part is planned, where you can discuss your impressions and thoughts on the movie.
