The project “Button and Modernism” was created and expanded gradually, its versions have already visited Russia, Europe and America. The exhibition at the Erarta Museum will present the most complete version, which grew up in the author’s "Museum of the pushpin".
Andrei Chezhin created objects and photo collages in which he imitated works and characteristic techniques of iconic modernist artists. With great knowledge and irony, the author presents us with the exclusivity of each creator.
The project of Andrey Chezhin is a postmodern textbook on modernism. Here the artist applied the entire classic set of techniques: revision and ironic reappraisal of the achievements of the previous era, hypertextuality, quotation, undetectedness of the author’s “I” position. Chezhin literally teases modernism, provoking him again and again to a duel-dialogue, sticking the tip of his sword-button into it.
The image of a button - flat and at the same time voluminous - appeared in Chezhin by chance. Representatives of modernism tried to overcome the inertia of the picture plane, either towards its even greater flattening, or, conversely, introducing the effect of sculpture into the picture. All this Andrei Chezhin beats up in his works. The smooth side of the button becomes his canvas, as in Jackson Pollock’s hoot, and the side with the tip turns into a sculpture, as in the dedication to Richard Serra. In the Lucio Fontana bay, both are connected, since Fontana himself made vertical cuts on the canvases, creating literally three-dimensional paintings.
For Chezhin, the button became a module, a surplus element (the term of the theory of the same name by Kazimir Malevich). The artist measures the variety of ideas of modernism with a caddy circle of clerical circles, goes on to contemporary authors and further to everyday objects. The objects that Andrei Chezhin shoots go beyond aesthetic photographs, becoming independent works. In them, the artist reveals the characteristic, adding to the design of utilitarian objects the design of the button itself.
