Lecture "Socialist Realism:
A Sense of Flight"

Socialist realism is one of the most controversial phenomena of Russian art of the 20th century. There is still no unanimous answer to the question “what was that?”: Style? method? artistic direction? To this day, disputes around his genuine and imaginary achievements have not ceased. He sought to combine initially opposing tasks and principles: the truth of life and the givenness of the topic, realistic vision and predictability in the interpretation of the depicted phenomena, high professionalism and the rejection of the experience of contemporary art. Such is the difficult fate of art, made dependent on politics and ideology. At the lecture we will try to understand the origins of this phenomenon and evaluate its evolution.
