The art of contemporary Italian artist and sculptor Massimo Gyotti (born in Turin in 1938) is equally classical and contemporary. He graduated from the Academy of Arts with a degree in Painting and Architecture and that is probably why his work is a constant symbiosis of painting and sculpture.

The artist’s development takes place under the sign of metal, which for Gyotti has become a favorite material, starting with works created in the 1970s. At that time, the master was fascinated by bronze sculptures that convey the plasticity of the human body. However, Gyotti quickly abandoned this idea and delved into a search for more refined expressiveness.

The exhibition presents panels and modular sculpture made of stainless steel - machined or in alloys. Metal is still the basis of creativity for the artist, which allows him to depict figures and forms, and convey the monumentality of the sculpture.

Tensions, spaces, details are one whole and, despite the inclusion of coarse, post-industrial elements, form an elegant and magnificent architecture.

Immersion in the material leads to new forms and works - they lose the three-dimensionality and severity that made up the strength of many of his previous creations. Metal still dominates, but is used as a canvas. These are stainless steel plates that have become an integral part of his work. Tension is maintained, intervals and forms equally enliven the “canvases” - everything returns and resembles the author’s most significant sculptures. Saturated color, geometric patterns, changing reflections and reflections enhance the rhythm and create tension. This new energy is no longer contained in steel structures and profiles. The invoice of stainless steel gives works of plate solemnity of work on canvas.

Italy is the birthplace of classical art. Contemporary Italian painting and sculpture is less known and does not appear so often in Russia. The exhibition opening at the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Pushkin Museum of the RT provides gallery visitors with the opportunity to partially fill this gap.
