"Masters of Soviet Photojournalism. 1920s - 1980s"

In 1991, the era in the history of Russia ended, the state called the USSR ceased to exist. At that moment contemporaries perceived this event with a mixture of various emotions: from hope to fear, from regret and bitterness to joy before the new world opening. The legacy of Soviet culture seemed to go deep into history, like the great country in which this culture was born and developed. This concerned literature and cinema, painting and pop music, architecture and design, and, of course, photography.

Years passed. And in a historical perspective, it became noticeable how few contemporaries and specialists of the 1990s were able to consider in that photograph. Only decades later, the main quality of Soviet photojournalism becomes apparent - its ability to preserve and convey the spirit of the era, the emotions that the citizens of the Soviet Union lived in, capture those momentous events that photographers sincerely believed should forever remain in the people’s memory.

Exhibition “Masters of Soviet Photojournalism. The 1920s - 1980s ”is not such a frequent opportunity today to look at that era of Russian photography, when the authors were able not only to visualize the everyday life of their contemporaries, but to convey their emotional state, their hopes and dreams — the invisible that was manifested when help of photographers.

In Soviet photojournalism, both authors and viewers felt their unity and mutual interest and respect. Portraits of Soviet people, stories from a happy childhood, lyrical observations of the changing seasons and landscape, a chronicle of the construction of new factories and new cities, changes in rural life - all this was painted with inspiration and joy, a sense of community of the creative process.

One hundred works by thirty-five authors are presented at the exhibition, including such classics of Russian photography as Naum Granovsky, Emanuel Evzerikhin, Vasily Egorov, Mark Markov-Grinberg, Yakov Ryumkin, Mikhail Savin, Mikhail Trakhman, Alexander Ustinov, Evgeny Khaldey, Yakov Khalip, Arkady Shaikhet.
