Odessans are invited to be inspired by the meanings of video art from the GDR

On Thursday, December 3, as part of a series of lectures entitled “Exploration of Space” from the Bavarian House, Odessa, a report by Dr. Klaus Lezer will take place, the general theme of which will be the development of an alternative art scene in the era of totalitarianism.

Dr. Loeser will dwell separately on the history of the genres of video art of the last years of the GDR, where the private use of video equipment was strictly limited by the security agencies. This led to the fact that it was the video that most concentrated the two main messages of unofficial art in East Germany - the development of new genres and protests against the existing regime. In this context, the development of an alternative art scene in the GDR is comparable to the work of Odessa artists of the 1980s and 90s.

Klaus Leeser

Dr. Klaus Loeser is a film historian, journalist, author of a number of documentaries. Since 1990, he has been the director of film programs at the Brotfabrik Center for the Arts and Culture. He investigated the development of an alternative art scene and the art of video of the last years of the GDR. He devoted a number of journalistic and scientific articles, a monograph, as well as several documentaries to this topic.

Last Thursday, November 26, the first lecture was held as part of the “Exploration of Space” cycle, prepared by the Bavarian House, Odessa Charity Foundation. The project opened with a lecture on the trends of modern urban planning, presented by an architect from Berlin Julian Brynersdorfer.
