The project “Reflection of Usish” I decided to devote to a rare little-known type of Dagestan art, “Usishinsky embroidery”.
The main feature of "Usishinsky embroidery" is:
- Strictly geometric composition of the ornament.
- Use of materials: white cotton canvas, silk threads of green, purple, beige, yellow, lilac, red, burgundy and black.
“Usisha embroidery” has not a household, but a ritual, sacral character and is the exclusive prerogative of the female half of the villages of Usisha and Zelmuk.
The origins of this art originate in the pre-Islamic period, the boundary of the Christian and pagan.
For this reason, it would not be right on my part to simply copy the ancient “Usishinsky” compositions of ornaments in order to give the work some national flavor.
As the basis for my work, I took a rapport composition, where the sun’s ray falling on the elements creates zigzag, broken and straight shadow patterns, and the base element is repeated many times, while its shadow is the link.
The “shadow” in this project is deeply symbolic. It seems to come to us from the depths of centuries, from deep mountain gorges, returning us to the origins of an ancient cult, a forgotten but not lost civilization.
