"Portrait of Humanity". Exhibition of works by Alexander Shengelia

The Russian Academy of Arts presents a retrospective exhibition of works of sculpture, painting and graphics by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexander Levanovich Shengelia.

The exposition makes it possible to trace the evolution of the artist’s work from his student years to the present, introduces his author’s searches in various types and genres of fine art. A graduate of the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov, a student of the famous L. E. Kerbel, Alexander Shengelia is best known for his easel and monumental sculpture. Virtuosity, sophisticated decorativeness, inexhaustible imagination and creative fearlessness - these are perhaps his main distinguishing features. His works are characterized by deep content, variety of themes, originality of compositional solutions. The artist equally masters the skill of academic modeling and plastic stylization.

The exhibition presents sculptural portraits - images of prominent personalities from different eras and cultures, compositions dedicated to philosophical, religious, ethical and aesthetic topics. The range of interests of Alexander Shengelia is extremely wide: the creation of the world, ancient and ancient Siberian mythology, Hinduism, Buddhism, biblical stories, Orthodoxy, modern spiritual teachings, music. Particular attention deserves graphic sheets - architectural fantasies, which the author was inspired by the nature of Spain that he loved.

“Fate is trying to teach the artist the most complex and fantastic thing - to live simultaneously in several dimensions exceeding the well-known three,” says Alexander Shengelia. He seeks to create a portrait of the most complex spiritual world of mankind with its ups and downs; sees in this his artistic mission and the most important task, which explains the choice of the name of the exhibition.

Alexander Shengelia was born in 1948 in Tbilisi. Graduated from the Moscow Art School, Tbilisi Academy of Arts, Moscow State Academic Art Institute. V. I. Surikov (workshop of L. E. Kerbel). Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts. member of the Union of Artists of Russia (Union of Artists of the USSR, 1977), honorary member of the Creative Union of Professional Artists, honorary member of the Creative Association "Constellation of Visions", member of the Association of Museums of Cosmonautics of Russia (AMKOS). Among the main works: "Anti-war demonstration" (1986, plaster, painting 5.5 × 3.4 m, National Cultural Center, Kazan.), "We will not let the enemy trample the Russian land" (1980, triptych, Russian Academy of Arts), "Leonardo do Vinci" (1976, bust, bronze, Kurgan Art Museum), "Mexican Revolution" (1982, chamotte, State Tretyakov Gallery), "Two Masters" (Feofan Grek Andrey Rublev) (1990, private collection in Washington) and others. He was awarded the medal "Worthy" of the Russian Academy of Arts for a series of sculptural works dedicated to the historical heritage of Russia, a diploma from the Cosmonaut Training Center. Yu. A.
