Public lecture of Maria Neklyudova "Country of love and other imaginary worlds in allegorical maps of the XVII — XIX centuries"

Everyone who has read Winnie the Pooh by A. Milne or the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien will probably remember the maps that help navigate these imaginary worlds. But not everyone knows that one of the first novels to which maps were attached appeared in France in the middle of the 17th century. The map, invented by the writer Madeleine de Scudery and drawn by the engraving artist Francois Chauvet, indicated the path to the Land of Tenderness, that is, allegorically represented the origin of love. Soon parodies appeared on this map and its imitations - maps of the Country of Love, the Country of Coquetry, the Country of Marriage, the Empire of Bacchus, etc. The lecture will discuss the beginning of this fashion and the formation of a tradition that has survived to our time.

Maria Neklyudova - Head of the Department of Cultural Studies and Social Communication of the School of Actual Humanitarian Studies (STEP) of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA); Head of the Laboratory for Historical and Cultural Research, STEPS, RANEPA; Professor, Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (MVSESEN), PhD (Comparative Literature, University of California). His research interests are French culture of the 16th – 18th centuries, historical theory, court society and the theater of the 17th century.

The lecture will be accompanied by a translation into Russian sign language.
