On the City Day, the Museum and City Festival will be held at the Museum of Moscow

September 8, Moscow will celebrate its 871th birthday. For several years now, the Museum of Moscow has traditionally been devoting a large-scale festival “Museum and City” to the City Day. Exhibitions, excursions, a celebration for children, delicious food, cinema and music await all museum guests on September 8 and 9.

Exhibitions in the Museum of Moscow

Throughout the holiday weekend, all exhibitions of the Museum of Moscow will be open for free access:

In the courtyard of the museum you can see the exhibition "Moscow Patrons and Philanthropists", prepared by the Museum and the Moscow Time Fund. She acquaints with the stories of famous Moscow philanthropists and patrons: among them are Alekseevs, Bakhrushins, Soldatyonkov, Morozovs, Rukavishnikovs, Solodovnikovs, Tretyakovs. The museums, theaters, institutes, hospitals they built became an integral part of Moscow life, and the exhibition will recall the history of many of them.

On the big screen in the courtyard the unique documentary “Color of Life” (director Viktor Belyakov) will be screened all day. In this film there are rare shots of color newsreels of Moscow of the 1940-1950s, which will allow you to see the post-war city in a new way.

Author’s excursion from Tutta Larsen and other excursions to museum exhibitions

Television and radio host, journalist and actress Tutta Larsen will tell guests of the Museum of Moscow about medieval Moscow and its inhabitants, about how the city grew and developed. She will conduct copyright tours of the exhibition "History of Moscow for Children and Adults" on September 8 and 9 at 12:00. Admission is free by registration.

Thanks to the excursions “Medieval Moscow History”, it will be possible to learn about the history of the settlement of the Moscow Territory by the Slavs and medieval Moscow in the 12th – 17th centuries, as well as the development of crafts, trade, and education. Schedule of excursions: September 8 at 14.00 and 16.00, September 9 at 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00.

On September 8, 13.00 and 17.00, museum guests are also waiting for the excursion “History and Architecture of the Providence Shops Complex” . Their main theme is the past and present of the architectural ensemble, which now houses the Museum of Moscow.

You can listen to interesting stories about the latest Moscow archaeological finds on curator tours of the exhibition “Finds of My Street” on September 8 at 12.00 and 14.00, September 9 at 16.00.

Family festival "Moscow on the pavement"

"Moscow on the pavement" is a celebration for young Muscovites and their parents and the Open Day of the Children’s Center of the Museum of Moscow. Together with the Peredvizhnik chain of stores, children will paint asphalt in the courtyard of the museum, as part of the Moscow Mesozoic campaign, the SHUM Design Studio will make a grand Shumosaurus. All day you can play and participate in free creative classes, have a great time, play and have fun in the company of the Minister of Silly Ideas. The festival will be held on September 9 from 12. 00 to 19. 00.

Local Food Market

On September 8 and 9, from 11. 00 to 21. 00 in the courtyard of the Museum of Moscow a Local Food Market will unfold. For five years now the project has been introducing Muscovites to the most diverse, interesting and unusual street food. This time, the theme of the market will be “Ideal City”, and all guests, as always, are guaranteed not only delicious food, but also a warm friendly atmosphere.

Festival Center

The Day of the City coincides with the annual Documentary Film Festival on urban culture and the life of the modern society Center Festival, organized by the Documentary Film Center and the Museum of Moscow. The festival program includes Russian premieres of documentary hits of the current festival year. Also on September 8 and 9 at the Center for Documentary Films of the Museum of Moscow you can watch films of the national competition for directors and video artists working with documentary film instruments.

Museum on the streets of Moscow

In honor of the holiday, the Museum of Moscow will enter the city. The City Excursion Bureau of the Museum of Moscow invites you to take walks in the vicinity of the Museum of Moscow and Moscow Gilyarovsky, the villages of Sokol and Usachevka, tours of the Moscow metro and the Moscow Central Circle, as well as a boat trip.
