Spring at Illusion:
Special Women’s Program March 6–9

Especially for International Women’s Day, for the whole weekend, the Illusion cinema prepared a rich program in which everything came together: fashion, music, archival films from the collection of the State Film Fund of Russia in the original language with Russian subtitles and the most interesting rolling films of recent years about women and for women.

FASHION

March 8, 18:40, “Slave of Love” + lecture hall of “Kinomoda” by Maryana Skuratovskaya

A lecture on fashion at the beginning of the 20th century on the example of the film “Slave of Love” by Nikita Mikhalkov (1975). 1918, the Civil War and the silent movie star, the prototype of which was the legendary Vera Cold. Historian and researcher, costume history specialist, member of the Writers’ Union of Russia, tour guide and lecturer, author of books and articles on fashion history, Maryana Skuratovskaya suggests talking about how turbans, wide-brimmed hats, furs and long dresses create the image of a beautiful film star who is so subtle embodied on the screen by Elena Solovey.

After “Slaves of Love”, March 15, we will go on a trip to the film “Star of captivating happiness” by Vladimir Motyl. The uprising in December 1825 changed the fate of many people, and it is to this fact, and not to the uprising itself, that the picture is devoted. And though men tried to change the state’s fate, women still stood behind them. Therefore, against the background of uniforms, flickers, hoods and couplings flicker every now and then. How wives and lovers of the Decembrists dressed in the film and in reality, and what they had to refuse, going for husbands to Siberia, is about this at a lecture by Maryana Skuratovskaya after watching the film.

March 9, 18:00, Cinema Jazz

On March 9, at 18:00, as part of the 20th International Festival of Igor Butman’s Triumph of Jazz, the Cinema Jazz project will be presented on the big screen for the first time at the Illusion cinema. Witty, fascinating and unique of its kind, a project in which the well-known jazz groups of Moscow create soundtracks for silent film masterpieces in real time, and viewers watch the unique interweaving and complementarity of picture and music.

In 2020, the International Festival "Triumph of Jazz" in cooperation with the State Film Fund of Russia for the first time will present "Cinema Jazz" on the big screen of the cinema "Illusion". Films of the 1920s from the foundation’s archives: the comedy of Nikolai Verkhovsky “The Ringer’s Film Career”, the first “truly surrealistic film” by Germain Dulac “The Sink and the Priest” and the comedy of the director N + N + N directed by Vladimir Schmidthof-Lebedev (Nini, Tax, Troubles) will be shown under the musical accompaniment of the participants and winners of the Cinema Jazz Awards of different years: PLANCK’sTONE, Ivanov Vibe Band and the Duet Vladimir Nesterenko.
