"The power of color." Exhibition of works by Ushang Kozayev

Ushang Kozayev is a vivid representative of modern abstract painting. Expression and powerful element of color permeates the artist’s large-scale paintings. His paintings were successfully exhibited in many cities of the world - in Moscow and Hamburg, Tokyo and Beijing, St. Petersburg and Madrid, Tskhinval and Vladikavkaz.

The artist was born in 1952 in with. Dumasturi GSSR in the family of the teacher. In 1975 he graduated from the Tskhinvali Art College named after M. Tuganov. Since 1978 - Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Native Ossetia has always been and remains a source of inspiration for the artist: her nature, history, heroic people, Nart epic.

At the first exhibitions, Ushang Kozayev presented landscapes and genre works about the life of the highlanders in a style close to primitivism. At the turn of the 1980s-1990s, the artist focused on the search for new pictorial and plastic solutions. In his canvases of those years there are contrasts of light and darkness, flashes of colors, rhythmic dissonances. He refers to the legacy of the Russian avant-garde, the work of V. Kandinsky, contemporary domestic and foreign abstract artists.

Ushang Kozayev creates his own version of the pictorial narrative in color, which can be called "color painting". He is particularly interested in combinations of bright red and bright yellow. He loves spreading paint, overflows and flowing from one color to another. At the same time, the artist’s abstract painting does not lose touch with reality, but rather, on the contrary, it is tied to it and is dictated by feelings experienced from experiencing and living a particular life situation. So cycles are born - diptychs, triptychs and compositions dedicated to military and historical events.

“He is not an outside observer, not just a witness, an eyewitness, but a direct participant in everything that was reflected in his paintings. That is why in the canvases of the painter, in a seemingly abstract element of color, silhouettes of human figures, concrete outlines of concrete architectural motifs and real landscape environment suddenly appear in the reflections of the phantom of light. The creative imagination of the artist seems to command the imagination of the viewer, leads him along, excites and causes a series of living associations, ”notes art critic A. Rozhin.

One of the main themes of Kozayev’s work in recent years is the heroic pages of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict of the 1990s, he created a series of works: “Tskhinval 08.08.08”, “South Ossetia”, “Dedicated to the war”. Filled with great emotional power, they provoke a sympathy response. For participating in the defense of his historic homeland, Ushang Kozayev was awarded the Order of “Uatsamonga” - the highest state award of the Republic of South Ossetia.

The artist is in constant motion and searching. He works hard and fruitfully, achieving impressive results.
