A FREE PERSON enters ... (16+) hopes in two actions

The first title of the early play by the British playwright, screenwriter and director Tom Stoppard, “A Free Man Comes In,” is “Walking on Water.” After the stage success of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is Dead, the play was revised and renamed.

George Riley is a loser. His only effective invention is a watch with a battle that drives everyone crazy with the anthem “Rule, Britain”. Everyone around George, except his wife Persephone, treat him like a madman. George’s world is practically not in touch with reality. They are constantly trying to tear him out of his universe and return to earth. However, everyone has their own truth.

The play by Alexander Bargman is primarily about the artist’s conflict with the world around him. George Riley is an artist, he constantly resists reality, lives in the world of his daughter’s children’s books and his always unfinished, naive inventions, illusions. Each has its own illusions. And it is not known whose world is more real, and how to find a compromise and the possibility of harmonious coexistence of such different ideas about life.

Tom Stoppard is not only a world-famous playwright, but also the author of the screenplays for the films Brazil, Despair, Shakespeare in Love, and others. He also was involved in the adaptation of his own work, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Tim Roth and Gary Oldman were invited to the title roles. In 2012, on adaptation of Stoppard, Joe Wright directed the film Anna Karenina.

In 2000, the playwright received the British Order of Merit from Queen Elizabeth II and assumed the title of Sir.
