What is painting? What is art?

How is music different from noise, painting from a painted plane, literature from job descriptions or technical descriptions of a steam locomotive? How do Dostoevsky’s novels differ from the police protocol or medical report? How is true architecture different from utilitarian design, and dance from running, jumping and tweaking?

That is precisely why the greatest works of art delight, fascinate, shake, purify, enlighten, and exalt so much - for they are beautiful! High beauty reveals high truths. The soul of man at all times longs for the heavenly, and his mind - for Truth.

The avant-garde was one of the answers to the question, where is the way out of the impasse in which European art of painting found itself on the long path of degradation from the Renaissance to the realism of the 19th century - from heaven to earth, from high to low, from face to flesh, from color to color and graphic arts. From the Byzantine icon to the despondent life of "realism."

The avant-garde sought to rediscover the depth of reality hidden by the external form of the image. Return the painting to its original color. Color - meaning, image, symbol in painting. Analysis, as a creative method of avant-garde artists, led to the separation of the components of the work into parts, the isolation and approval of the original values in painting: space and color. To the true, decorative value of painting.
