The theater-art project “The Yolka at the Ivanovs”, which was based on the work of the same name by the famous Russian playwright, Oberiu poet Alexander Vvedensky, is turned to folklore traditions and carnival festive culture. As in the play, the boundaries of reality are blurred here, and transformations and metamorphoses occur around. The images of the project line up in an ironic and paradoxical experience of time, in which adults and children simultaneously exist, and in a joint game, they merrily share their age.
As planned by the curator, the exposition is a model of the New Year’s dream, where all the characters fall asleep, and their lifetime goes into the mise en scenes of another play - “The Tale of Lost Time” by Yevgeny Schwarz - the magical world of childhood and its unique capabilities.
The artist of the project, the famous theater designer Sergey Yakunin, creates a special set design for the exhibition, using threads and tissue paper.
Genuine attributes from the Nikulin Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard (trainers’ wands, curtain, trapeziums, clown props), artistic objects of circus artist Andrei Shchelokov, bright, colorful drawings, collages, art objects of participants of children’s art workshops Gallery "Izopark".
“Christmas music” gives a festive mood for children’s choir, chamber orchestra and organ of Vladimir Martynov.
A separate “cabinet” of the exhibition is devoted to the first book illustrations for the “Christmas Tree of Ivanovs”, which in the early 1990s were made by the artist Leonid Tishkov. The exhibition includes the author’s animation based on the play and the video recording of the performance reading, where Leonid Tishkov, presenting himself as Alexander Vvedensky in a hungry Petrograd, at the same time rewrites by hand and pronounces aloud the text “Yolki v Ivanovykh”.
The exhibition is accompanied by a large cultural program: a festival of cartoons, film screenings, the VI International Festival of Chamber Music "The Winter Way", New Year’s children’s performances, creative workshops, meetings with artists, collective readings of oberiuts.
