On July 11, the first solo exhibition of Moscow artist Yevgeny Sakhatsky, “Nothing New,” will open at the site of young art START TSSA WINZAVOD The heroes of his work are representatives of informal communities and subcultures, residents of the outskirts. The artist paints the courtyards of sleeping areas, garbage cans, painted walls, finding a special aesthetic in everyday wildness. The exhibition features paintings, graphics and objects.
The exhibition "Nothing New" - a return to the style of hop art. This art uses the outlying subculture as a material and combines at first glance the incompatible concepts of “gopnik” and “art”. The term “hop art” arose in the early 2000s in St. Petersburg as an expression of the traditional conflict between Moscow intellectual conceptualism and brutal street art. Representatives of this direction managed to formulate the language of “guys from the outskirts” in the reality of postmodernism, endowing their work with a simple and understandable narrative. “What I see, I draw” - this formula of hop art is used in his project by Evgeny Sakhatsky.
Vera Trakhtenberg, curator of the START Center for Contemporary Arts Winery project 2017/2018 season: “Eugene Sakhatsky paints portraits of“ children of our time ”, representatives of informal communities and various music or backyard subcultures, but he does not consider these people to be marginalized: the artist’s look reveals the everyday aspects of their life, clinging to for details. A T-shirt with the name of a famous street fashion designer or a man-advertisement in a telephone suit - all these are fragments of everyday life that we often do not notice. The artist’s heroes live a very ordinary life, but at the same time they are outside the philistine environment, consciously labeling themselves “other,” outcasts. Nothing new is, on the one hand, a reference to the already noisy work of artists such as Grigory Yushchenko and Kirill Shamanov, but, on the other hand, the name of the exhibition quite clearly formulates an attempt to figure out if this is so “new” to us today. This is the most important question the exhibition poses for the audience and the community. ”
The author of the exhibition considers it to be visually interesting that which seems repulsive to most. The aesthetics of the disgusting and wild are the essence of his artistic language. The space created by the artist will remind the viewer of the "backyard of the sleeping area." In addition to paintings, an installation of painted trash cans will be presented here, each of which has its own history, its own content.
Artist Eugene Sakhatsky: “In my works I want to convey the absurdity and humor of life, its surrealism. I find romantic beauty where others do not want to see it. For example, garbage cans throughout the city have a different shape and color, battered and worn. They are art objects in themselves. ”
The exhibition on the site of young art START will be the first personal project of the artist Eugene Sakhatsky. At the Center for Contemporary Art Winery, he will begin to search for his own artistic language and gain experience working with a curator.
