About two hundred exhibits of the exhibition are provided from the fund of the Academy of Folk Art. The collection of graphics of Mexico was formed as a result of many years of creative activity and exchange exhibitions between the artists of the Workshop of the People’s Graphics of Mexico and the Workshop of People’s Graphics «Sovietsky Lubok», directed by Viktor Penzin, graphic artist, collector, now president of the Academy of Folk Art, artistic director of the Moscow Museum of Folk Graphics.
The works of a large engraver of the XIX century Jose Guadalupe Posada (1851-1913) are imbued with a folkloric spirit, especially characteristic for him are «kalavers» - various sketches with skeletons dressed in the clothes of peasants and townspeople, landlords and traders. «Calavera» (translated from Spanish as a skull) is the custom to perform the image of skulls and skeletons in connection with the Day of Remembrance of the Dead.
Sheets of Leopoldo Mendez (1902-1962), which continues the tradition of socially active Posada art, are subject to one clearly expressed idea and acquire the character of a monumental symbol. Mendes became the founder of the Workshop of People’s Graphics (1937), led the creation of a series of anti-fascist posters. A series of documentary lithographs depicting the brutal murder of rural teachers by gangs of religious fanatics was carried out in 1939. By 1942, the creation of the engraving «The Train of the Doomed for the» Black Book of Fascist Terror in Europe «refers. Leopoldo Mendez was awarded the International Peace Prize, and she received the Workshop of People’s Graphics.
A series of engravings «Images of the Mexican Revolution», created in 1947 by the artists of the Workshop of People’s Graphics, is the largest work of the association. 85 pages document the history of the struggle of the Mexican people, beginning with peasant riots and the first strikes of industrial workers. The exhibition exhibits twenty-six etchings of this series.
