Exhibition of icon painting "The Art of Tradition"

On December 3, the Art of Tradition exhibition opens at the Gallery of Siberian Art (23 Karl Marx St.). The exposition includes about 50 works of recent years, created for the temples of the city and the region by well-known icon painters of Irkutsk: Elena Aleshina, Irina Gorbunova and Mikhail Lutaenko. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to get acquainted with modern icon painting, united in one exhibition space.

A modern icon is not always just a craft. It should be the art of Tradition and at the same time be modern, and therefore live, be in development. Artists do not copy ancient samples, but, relying on them, seek their own language in icon painting, correlating them with knowledge of theology, church canon, iconography, composition, coloration and symbolism of color. The works of the authors of this exhibition reveal the individual characteristics and creative searches of each. And at the same time they are united by a common understanding of tradition, canon, space of temple culture. The experience of joint 25 years of work allows the artists of the Irkutsk diocese to successfully solve artistic problems in the beautification of churches.

The exhibition "Art of Tradition" will be open at the Gallery of Siberian Art (Karl Marx St., 23) from 3 to 29 December. Due to the difficult epidemiological situation, visiting the museum is possible only by appointment (tel.: 33-43-89). The museum has a mask mode. During the exhibition, weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays from 15.00 to 18.00 in the exhibition halls you can meet with icon painters to ask questions.
