From March 19 to June 19, 2016, the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (64 Karl Marx St.) presents the exhibition “Karl Bryullov” from the collection of the Russian Museum (St. Petersburg)
The exhibition of paintings and drawings by Karl Bryullov was opened for the first time in Kazan as part of the Culture and Exhibition Center in the Pushkin Museum. The exhibition features fifty works by the largest master of Russian painting, the author of the famous painting "The Last Day of Pompeii", the creator of a number of masterpieces in the field of chamber and ceremonial portraiture.
The works of Karl Bryullov from the collection of the Russian Museum represent quite fully all the stages of the master’s work. This is an academic painting in which the artist worked (Conversation Numa Pospiliya with the nymph Egeria), a chamber and front portrait (Self-portrait, Portrait of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna, wife of Nicholas I, with her daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna on horseback ride in Peterhof Park), historical genre (sketches for paintings The Last Day of Pompeii, the Siege of Pskov), painting and drawing of the "Italian" period (Girl picking grapes in the vicinity of Naples), the theme of the East (Sweet waters near Constantinople), sketches of monumental paintings of temples and churches (for St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow).
At the exhibition at the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, masterfully executed works of drawing by pencil and sepia and watercolors are presented: portraits, genre scenes in which the artist embodied his impressions of what he saw, as well as cartoons and caricatures made by the artist during his first stay in Italy (1823-1835). All Italian genres of Bryullov are extremely cheerful. In them, the artist festive color, the clear radiance of the sun creates a festive elated mood.
The work of K.P. Bryullov, who became the pinnacle of late Russian romanticism, embodied the change of a sense of harmonious integrity and beauty of the world to a sense of tragedy and conflict of life, to an interest in strong passions, unusual topics and situations. An outstanding master, both in ceremonial and chamber portraits, Bryullov made an evolution in his work - from a joyful perception of life to complicated psychologism.
All this rich spectrum of creative searches of the master - “Great Karl” - is demonstrated by the exhibition of works in the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan.
