The exhibition features magazines published in Tsarist Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century, in 1917 and in the first post-revolutionary decades. Among them are central and peripheral, mass and specialized publications.
The unifying principle of the magazines exhibited was the presence of the word “red” or red in the title of the cover as a symbol of revolutionary scrapping in the country’s history - “Red Army man”, “Red officer”, “Red Petrograd”, “Red Raven”, “Red bell tower” and etc. In other publications, such as “Atheist at the Machine”, “Beach”, “Splinter”, the ideologically saturated background of time is clearly reflected.
It was a time when the covers of magazines were created by such large artists as Boris Kustodiev, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Alexander Deineka, Konstantin Yuon (Red Panorama, Krasnaya Niva), constructive style magazines were designed by Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, brothers Stenbergs and other avant-garde masters (Red Wings, Red Student, Red Shoots). The magazine cover gallery provides an obvious panorama of changes in the visual range of images and events that follow the vector of Russian history. From the exquisite covers of women’s magazines of the 1910s and the ostro-satirical editions of the eve of revolutionary events, the focus of attention is shifting to the field of ideological mythologists who own a revolutionary-charged society.
The exhibition “Redness will save the world?..” is a selection of publications from a unique collection of domestic magazines of famous collectors and bibliophiles Alexei Anatolyevich Vengerov and his son Sergei.
The idea of enlightenment, the continuous spiritual and historical connection of generations through books and book knowledge, for Alexei and Sergey Vengerov became the source of many educational projects - these are exhibitions and serious publishing projects. Father and son Vengerov - graduates of the Moscow Aviation Institute. Alexey Anatolyevich Vengerov - Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, laureate of the Russian Government Prize in the field of culture (2011) for the unique publishing project “Bibliography”.
