From June 13 to September 15, the Classic Photo Gallery will host an exhibition of one of the most famous and sought-after American photographers - Christopher Berkett. It will present the brightest fruits of more than forty years of creativity, including the latest work in 2019, made using the technique of hand-held optical printing from a Cibachrome slide.
The exhibition includes about 130 photobaths, united by the name “The brilliant color of Christopher Berkett: new works”, which differ not only in their impressive size (up to 100x150 cm), but also in the characteristic color contrast. It will be the most complete and large-scale exhibition of his works over the past few years. For the first time, stunning pictures of Christopher’s nature were successfully presented to the Russian public in the Gallery of Classic Photography in 2011. And today, fans of the “guru of color” have the opportunity to refresh old impressions and get new ones.
In the works of Burkett, the technical mastery of printing is closely intertwined with a special vision and accurate transfer of natural colors and shades of nature. The master uses an unusually complex technique of color photo printing, carefully chooses the place and time of the shooting - as a result of his work in color contrasts are more like illustrations for fairy tales than for life. It is no coincidence that Christopher calls his photos superreal, and he understands his mission as follows: “To show what most people do not see.”
Visitors to the exhibitions of Burkett often note with pleasure that their sensations are akin to viewing paintings, although they know that they have photographs in front of them. At the same time, his works do not imitate the “pictorial” effects of brush strokes, mixing paints or deliberately violent colors. Christopher not only captures the appearance of things, like great painters, he penetrates deep into the mystery of the external appearance of nature and embodies it in works of art that reveal its inner light and living structure. The best photos of the master give a feeling of an almost mystical connection with the viewer - this feeling can be experienced only with direct viewing of the original print.
Christopher Burkett is one of America’s most popular and classic photographers. Every year, more than a thousand hand-made prints are sold worldwide, costing from two to twenty thousand dollars. At 68, Christopher continues to actively shoot, he is full of strength and creative energy. Only a limited supply of unique Cibachrome paper, which was discontinued in 2011, can stop the creative process. And when Burkett turns off his photographic enlarger for the last time in his laboratory, we will be able to see the end of the era of analog photography alive.
