The A.V. Schusev State Research Museum of Architecture together with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia represent the creative heritage of the outstanding Slovenian architect of the twentieth century, Jozhe Plechnik. In the framework of the Seasons of Slovenian culture in the Russian Federation in 2017-2018, for the first time in Moscow, the work of an architect is exhibited, which gave the Slovenian capital the features of a modern European city. From a sleepy province, it has turned into a capital city of new ideals and aesthetics of the secession, and today it is rightfully called the "Ljubljana Plečnik".
In the appearance of the city of Ljubljana, each attentive citizen and guest is struck by the unity of the ancient remains of Roman settlements and Baroque architecture of the 18th century. For almost three decades, Plechnik worked on changing the appearance of Ljubljana, making changes to the already existing urban landscape. The National and University Library, the Garden of All Saints - the city necropolis of Jale, the Church of St. Francis in the urban district of ишiška and the Triple Bridge over the Ljubljana River are just some of the examples of its architecture in Ljubljana.
Many of Plecnik’s projects were born and were embodied in Vienna, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The buildings in Prague - the reconstruction of the Prague Castle on the instructions of President Masaryk and the erection of the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord - became a source of inspiration for many Czech architects. Slovenia and the Czech Republic are making joint efforts today to include Plecnik’s cultural heritage sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Regardless of the modernist trends in architecture that dominated at the beginning of the 20th century, Plecnik managed to create his own original language. The peculiar interpretation of the national cultural heritage, along with the use of rich decorative elements of symbolism, gives his creations the features of timeless architecture.
The exhibition will present a number of its main buildings in photographs and copy graphics.
