Exhibition "The Many Faces of the East"

“The Many Faces of the East” - an exhibition under this name will open in the Irkutsk Art Museum on July 6, 2016 as part of the project “Opening Reserves”. Recall that earlier in 2016 the museum hosted the exhibition “Opening the storerooms. European masters XVII - beg. XX century. "

This time, the exhibition will feature art from India, China, Japan and Mongolia from the 19th to 20th centuries. Visitors will be able to see paintings, cult sculpture, small plastic, silver jewelry, traditional ceramics - only about fifty works. All of them are from the funds of the Irkutsk Art Museum. The art historians, as part of the organization of the exhibition, tried to pick up precisely those art objects that had not been exhibited for a long time.

“Among the exhibits will be Chinese scrolls, Mongolian tanks, Indian saris, Japanese ukiyo-e,” says Anna Parfenenko, the museum’s curator, “we want to show the vibrant and distinctive culture of these countries, as well as the refraction of centuries-old traditions in contemporary art. The chosen period - the last two centuries - will allow the viewer to feel the continuity in the work of authors of different generations and to catch the differences. For example, in the art of the East, the image of bamboo as a symbol of a strong person who absorbs the wisdom of life is one of the most circulated. The collection of our museum has bamboo drawings made in the 19th century and in the 20th. Visitors will be able to compare them, to feel the influence of the trends of the time. ”

The exhibition will be located in the Main Building of the Irkutsk Art Museum at the address: st. Lenin, 5. The opening of the exhibition will take place on July 6 at 15.00 - according to tradition, the entrance to the public for the opening is free. The exhibition will run until August 7, 2016.
