Exhibition of one painting by Jan van Goyen (1596 - 1656) "Fishing boat at the mouth of the river"

Jan van Goyen is a renowned Dutch artist of the first half of the 17th century, the founder of the school of realistic landscape.

River landscapes and "marinas" become the main theme of his work. He liked to paint expanses of water with merchant ships and fishing boats with a church or village in the background. A master of tonal painting, Goyen used an almost monochrome palette. The sun is never shown in the master’s paintings, the sky is covered with clouds saturated with light and moisture, a dense fog spreads over the coast.

Typically, Goyen placed the horizon line very low to emphasize the sky. This point of view of the artist created a “panoramic view”, about which the famous researcher of the Dutch landscape V. Stakhov remarked: “The panoramic view is often considered the most significant contribution of Dutch artists to landscape painting. This phenomenon is purely Dutch: a vast plain seems to extend endlessly, small towns barely rising above flat fields, a low horizon, often leaving up to four-fifths of the area of the picture for a humid sky, a rich change of clear lights and transparent shadows in stratus clouds. This is reflected in the calm glorification of the phenomenon that fascinates anyone who has more than a nodding acquaintance with the country. "
