Exhibition "On Both Sides of Man"

November 29 at 18:30 in the Perm Art Gallery opens the exhibition "On Both Sides of Man", which will feature works by Moscow artist Maria Vladimirova.

This name is new to Perm. Maria Vladimirova graduated from the faculty of painting of the Moscow State Art Institute. Surikova in 1988, a member of the Russian Union of Artists. Participates in exhibitions since 1987.

The main exhibition baggage of Maria Vladimirova is made up of personal and group exhibitions dedicated to Russian contemporary art in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ukraine, Bulgaria, France, Italy, and the USA.

Maria Vladimirova is an artist whose work combines the features and searches of the generation of artists of the 1980s, which is invisibly connected with the art of non-conformists of the early 1970s. The famous collector and researcher of art of the second half of the XX century. Alexander Glezer notes that one of the works by Vladimirova was acquired by the famous collector of unofficial Russian art, Professor Norton Dodge, for the Zimmerli Museum, one of the largest university museums in the USA and “… is stored in his collection along with the works of Eric Bulatov, Ilya Kabakov, Oscar Rabin, "Vladimir Nemukhin and other classical artists of Russian art of the second half of the XX century, as nonconformists are called today."

Now, the works of Maria Vladimirova will replenish the collection of the Perm Art Gallery. This gift of the artist is dedicated to the exhibition.

Here are more than thirty works. Among the graphic works there are also valuable episodes of the artist’s biography. So, in a children’s drawing of the period of apprenticeship in an art school - an unusual picture of the holiday of November 7th. The teacher, a well-known artist, who later became famous as the founder of social art, Vitaliy Komar, gave the task of depicting a national holiday without resorting to bright colors, using only plastic and plot techniques. The result was a composition that was unexpected for children’s consciousness, which made Masha Vladimirova the teacher’s favorite student.

A separate “island” is the graphic cycle of the 1980s, dedicated to Georgia. These are linear drawings with black ink on white paper, which are distinguished by the elasticity and liveliness of the line, the ability to grasp the character’s character and convey it in a few lines. Georgia, in the author’s reflection of the artist, appears as part of the earthly, inhabited space, where gray antiquity and modernity are inseparable. This connection of times is processed by the artist into images of paintings that are completely different in style than graphics. It is in the paintings that make up the basis of the exposition that the main statement of the artist is enclosed.

“I am interested in various religions, beliefs, symbolism of myths,” says Maria Vladimirova about herself. The color system of many of her paintings is based on a comparison of black and white. At the same time, black, thanks to rich textures, breaks up into many complex shades, becoming picturesque. Color acts as a symbol of eternity. In the fine system of works, along with permanent images - a white bird, a bowl - there are elements of ancient ornaments, ancient vessels, graphic symbols that refer to ancient mythology. The author often introduces fragments of texts into paintings, uses the semantics of color — gold and bronze, and assembly techniques. Objects from earthly life do not just go beyond the boundaries of everyday life, they balance on the border of material and intangible. In Vladimirova’s paintings, symbolic subtext and philosophical detachment are combined with deep emotionality, and the sophistication of compositional decisions with decorativeness.

The exhibition will run until the end of January 2019.
