Exhibition "Presentiment of the North. Perm Way"

In the Perm Art Gallery, the exhibition “Presentiment of the North. Perm way. ” This is part of the Russian inter-museum cultural project “Development of the North. A Thousand Years of Success ”, aimed at attracting interest in the history of the“ Russian path ”to the North and understanding its role in the development of our state.

Project “Development of the North. A Thousand Years of Success ”, initiated by the Norilsk Nickel company, united museums from 9 regions of Russia around the theme of the history of the Russian North. The author of the idea and the project manager is Julia Kantor, Doctor of Historical Sciences. In 2017, the project was implemented in Veliky Novgorod, Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 2018 - implemented in Vyborg, Omsk and Perm. In 2019, exhibitions will be held in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Norilsk. The project participants tell about the bright, full of drama and exciting adventures of the history of the Russian route to the North with the help of the arsenal of exhibition tools available today to museum workers.

An important role in the history of the formation of Russian statehood was played by the ancient Perm land. It was here that the trade routes interlinking this land with southern and western civilizations and states intertwined; it was here that the path to the vast expanses of Siberia was opened to the young Russian state at one time.

Chronologically exhibition “Presentiment of the North. Perm Way ”covers the period from the X-th century to 1917. The exhibition will feature more than 200 items from the collection of the Perm Gallery, museums of the Perm Territory, Perm Pedagogical University, the State Archives of the Perm Territory, the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum and other institutions.

The exhibition consists of several sections in which the means of painting, drawing, arts and crafts, archival documents tell about the early stages of development of our region. For example, in the section devoted to the history of the ancient Perm land and its cultural heritage, unique exhibits from the archaeological collection of the Perm Humanitarian Pedagogical University will be shown for the first time.

In the section devoted to the Christianization of Perm land, iconographic images of the most revered saints will be presented: Stephen Perm, Saints Gerasim, Pitirim, Jonah and others. Among them there is a rare hagiographic icon “Stephen the Great of Perm with life” (end of the 18th century), “The Prophet Elijah in the cave” (15th century), “The Holy Fool Prokopiy Ustyuzhsky and the Monk Varlaamy Khutynsky” (16th century) and other exhibits.

The exhibition also contains sections devoted to people and their deeds. These are the Stroganovs, with whose name Yermak’s successful campaign to Siberia, the development of salt production, industry, science, and culture are associated. These are the Demidovs, Vsevolozhsky and Lazarevs, who also played a big role in the creation and formation of the mining industry. This is Babinov, who built the road 400 years ago, which for almost 200 years remained the main transit artery through the Ural Mountains to the east of Russia, to Siberia, the first road connecting Europe with Asia.

The expositions of the sections are filled with different types of art: painting and graphics, artistic casting of copper and cast iron, carving and painting on wood, gold embroidery.

The authors of the exhibition, combining different dramatic lines, different times and types of art, show the multidimensionality of our history. And this is the main feature of the exposure.

The exhibition is addressed to a wide range of viewers. Its main goal is enlightenment. To tell, show, remind the inhabitants of our region of how much Perm has made to the development of new spaces, the development of the economy, science and culture of the country.

The exhibition was organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Perm Territory and will be open to visitors from November 23, 2018 to February 17, 2019.
