Exhibition "Press & Release. Photographic Engraving by Peter Miller" (USA)

On August 7 at 16.00 in the Gallery of Siberian Art (23 Karl Marx St.) the exhibition “Press & Release. Photo engraving by Peter Miller "(USA). The exposition contains more than 40 works made in a rare technique that allows you to convey the subtlest shades of black and white and gives the image the effect of three-dimensionality and amazing depth.

The artistic worldview of Peter Miller was shaped by Japanese and American cultures. Also, the work of the artist was significantly influenced by Andrei Tarkovsky, in whose films the movement of the camera became a reflection of the flow.

Peter Miller was born in Philadelphia (USA), but has lived in the Japanese city of Kamakura for the past 30 years. Since childhood, keen on photography, after moving to Japan, he decides to devote his life to it. He carefully studies classical European, Chinese and Japanese engravings and discovers the long-forgotten labor-intensive photo-engraving technique invented in the 19th century.

Today, Miller is one of the few artists working in this technique. His works are stored in the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), the National Museum of American Art (Washington, USA), the Yenisch Museum (Vevey, Switzerland), in the Pushkin Museum. Pushkin and the Museum of the East in Moscow and other world collections.

The work of Peter Miller is filled with extraordinary depth, a conceptual generalization of fleeting natural phenomena and everyday life, an attempt to capture the timeless. They refer the viewer to the atmosphere of old Japanese films and photographs of the Meiji era (the turn of the XIX-XX centuries). Photos, which became the basis for photo engravings, were made by the artist in Japan, Russia, USA, Nepal, Finland, Italy.
