The Stella Art Foundation presents a new, fourth exhibition, which the Cupid creative association displays in the Foundation. Again, this is an extremely intense installation, accompanied by an eccentric performance. Needless to say, the saturation of the subject environment for the conceptual group is equivalent to the semantic density of the text. And if, as in our case, not only walls with a floor, but also a ceiling are occupied for the installation, and the performance is a solid rap recitative in a dead language, then the authors definitely had something to say.
The artists of the Cupid group about their project: “There is a theory that the Renaissance artists did not want to invent anything new - they wanted to revive antiquity, to become like the ancients. It can be said that this project failed miserably. Irish monks of the 7th century also tried to write in exquisite Latin, and Ingres dreamed of becoming the new Raphael.
But both the monks and Ingres did something different. This craving for the beautiful, for another world, is characteristic not only of undeveloped societies or Irish intellectuals of the Middle Ages, but also of all those who seek Great Art, including us, the so-called conceptualists.
There is a suspicion that all the great achievements in art are the result of errors and misunderstanding, confusion and false erudition. What needs to be done to make this happen again and always be? This topic is dedicated to the new project m / v “Cupid”. Latin rap music rap, humanitarian aid from the past - antique fragments dropped on double parachute bras, a nun skiing out of a wall, aquariums with frozen sections of images are waiting for their viewer to think about how “art instead of art is made” ". We hope for your misunderstanding. Thank!"
As you can see, the "cupids" absolutely do not make secrets from what they are going to show to their public, giving in advance an almost complete list of exhibits for the upcoming exhibition. They know for sure: to see their work does not mean to understand what they are talking about. Moreover, the artists hope precisely for our misunderstanding, thereby gently pushing us to free interpretations, and therefore to mistakes. To those productive mistakes that they see as the source of all the best in art. Indeed, everything that is correct is a rule, a law and a norm, and their opposite is freedom, without which creativity cannot exist in principle. Yes, from the lips of the so-called conceptualists, such a statement sounds shockingly romantic. But it seems that this very freedom, coupled with misunderstanding and mistakes, they offer us, the audience, to share with them, luring us into their game, into their “art instead of art”. Therefore, the new project of "Cupids", among other things, also looks like a conspiracy. Not only and not so much of its members, artists themselves - everything has been clear with them for a long time, but their entire team is with us, the audience, who, as it turns out, have been recorded in advance in their pretty gang. Otherwise, where would a similar name come from?
The Cupid creative association was created by three prominent representatives of the Moscow conceptual school Yuri Albert, Victor Skersis and Andrey Filippov in 2008. The fourth member of the company, Paruyr Davtyan, joined it in 2015. During its existence, the association has implemented six large-scale exhibition projects: Vitya and Zaytsy. Fragma, Pragma, Enigma. Т / о "Cupid" (Project_Factory, Moscow, 2008); Show and Tell: Omouth. (Stella Art Foundation, Moscow, 2009); Water abstraction (Project_Factory, Moscow, 2010); Caspar, David, Friedrich. At the exhibition “Aesthetics against Information” (Center for Cultural Communication, Klaipeda, 2010); Metamorphus (Stella Art Foundation, Moscow, 2011); Station caretaker (Stella Art Foundation, Moscow, 2015).
