Exhibition of contemporary artists "Takeda. Pain and Will"

From March 15 to March 30, 2017 in Moscow, the Stella Art Foundation will host an exhibition of contemporary artists “Takeda. Pain and Will ”within the framework of the socio-cultural campaign of the Takeda pharmaceutical company. The curator of the project, Mikhail Sidlin, invited such Russian authors as the MishMash group (Misha Leikin and Masha Sumnina), Lisa Morozova, Yana Smetanina, Chaim Sokol, Oleg and Olga Tatarintsevs and Aristarch Chernyshev to participate in the exhibition.

For centuries, the theme of pain and related physical and mental experiences has attracted artists and thinkers. And in contemporary art, this topic is one of the key concepts. The problem of physical suffering is familiar to any person from personal experience, whether it is an ordinary toothache or a serious illness. Unlike their predecessors, contemporary artists often seek not only to rethink painful sensations, but also to relive them. This fact significantly changes the general mood of the works - humility and fear are replaced by struggle and overcoming. Today, art is capable of not only evoking experience, but conceptualizing it. Thus, works of art can teach society sympathy for their neighbors, and therefore help a suffering person.

In anticipation of the exhibition, project curator Mikhail Sidlin noted: “Art is capable of both causing experience and distracting from it. Contemporary art affects the painful points of society. And it can elevate the viewer to a new level of freedom. "

Exhibition “Takeda. Pain and Will ”combines the work of Moscow artists on the problem of pain and relief from it. The paintings of Yana Smetanina tell the stories of real people whom the artist met in the hospice. The video performance of Lisa Morozova represents an artist who voluntarily exposes herself to pain. The project of the duet MishMash was created on the basis of old dental aids. The Chaim Falcon series is dedicated to famous people who have experienced torture and concentration camps. The work of Olga and Oleg Tatarintsevs from ceramics and metal is dedicated to artists who, overcoming fear, continued to work in countries where their activities were banned. The multimedia object of Aristarch Chernyshev offers an author’s interpretation of the eternal theme of life and death, the mortality of the world and the transience of life.
