Since July 23, a group project of artists working in different media will open in the Nagornaya gallery of the Moscow Exhibition Halls Association, where they explore the topic of instability based on the concept of destructiveness.
The study is based on the anthropological and socio-psychological monograph by Erich Fromm "The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness", where the author reflected: "The answer to existential dilemmas can be creativity or destructiveness in people’s actions. Man alone is aware of himself as a creature created without his consent and desire. But his mind and imagination are driven by an urgent need to go beyond this passive, limited state and become the creator of his own life.
The concept of "destruction", in direct contrast to constructive art, sets itself the goal of creating a feeling or illusion of disharmony, disproportion, or at least deformation of the artistic whole, than causing (ultimately) discomfort.
The bottom line is that the integrity of human existence consists of a mutual transition of opposites, which means that the same existential (higher) human needs can be satisfied by absolutely opposite means.
Destructiveness is a tool from which instability flows. In principle, we can say that destructiveness is not always negative, since it satisfies a higher need. When destruction occurs, the whole system is disassembled into its components, distorted, and therefore becomes unstable. From this unstable something new can be produced / created / assembled.
The curator of the project, Kristina Sitnikova, invites the participants to reflect on the theme of creation through destruction: “The main question that I invite artists to think about is: Can destructiveness lead to creation? If so, in what ways can you do it? "
The exhibition can be divided into two parts: a zone of "internal" destructiveness and a zone of "external" destructiveness. The first deals with the destruction of the human psyche, soul. This is a conditional space where a person’s worldview was formed. The zone can be presented to the viewer as a house, a workshop, a room, a corner in the country, where he spent his childhood, was inspired. The hall is formed by works that relate to the themes: childhood, spirituality, upbringing and constant self-reflection.
In the second part, destruction is directed at any external objects, the environment. If we are talking about self-destruction, then it is aimed at the body, the physical shell. Destructiveness goes beyond the internal. The works presented in this zone seem to create chaos, an explosion. Artists work with materials such as concrete, metal, iron, plaster, spray cans for graffiti.
The exhibition is the result of an open-call. 16 external artists and 13 students from the HSE School of Design took part in the project.
